I'm against the "Burn the old coins" idea anyway, but a lot of people are missing the nuance in BIP361. It's not a full confiscation of every pre-quantum coin. The actual BIP361 proposal is: disable ECDSA/Schnorr spends after a ~5-year migration window, in favor of letting people use a ZKP rescue if they still have their BIP-39 seed words on a BIP32 wallet. But here's the fly in the ointment: What about the 'Patoshi' coins and other pre-BIP32 coins? We're talking ~1.7M BTC in early P2PK outputs with exposed pubkeys. No seed phrase = no ZKP rescue. Those coins either get moved manually by their owners before the sunset, or they get frozen forever under the new rules. Some have floated pre-Q-day commitments or other workarounds, but that just raises the obvious question: If they're gonna have to do a pre-Q-day commitment anyway, why not just push the responsibility on the holders of these old coins to shift to a quantum-safe output (BIP-360 P2MR or whatever)? Why force a consensus rule change that effectively confiscates a large chunk of that 1.7M BTC for anyone who doesn't do the pre-Q-day commitment, or does not upgrade in time? For this reason I'm still firmly in the "introduce a quantum-safe output type, let people migrate voluntarily, and let the chips fall where they may" camp. Bitcoin's strength has always been opt-in upgrades and not changing the rules on people. Confiscating even a portion of old coins is the wrong precedent to set. No to BIP361.

Unpopular opinion: This is going to happen and most holders silently want this to happen. Assuming it’s done with a fair grace period, it seems right. People talking about the ‘original ethos’ are talking out of their sidelined arses or virtue signaling.

Cypherpunk Jameson Lopp and other Bitcoin developers propose BIP-361 to freeze quantum vulnerable wallets. This could lock dormant BTC like Satoshi Nakamoto’s 1.1M coins, now worth $74B, before quantum computers can steal them.

The cleanest way to “freeze” quantum-insecure coins is just to sunset *all P2PK UTXOs at a defined block height.* Give Satoshi and anyone else, say, 3-5 years to move them. If they haven’t moved to quantum resilient addresses by then, they are assumed to have been lost or forfeited by their owners. Nothing wrong with sunsetting old network components that present vulnerabilities. This gets rid of the “confiscation” language. It’s a technical bug fix/security upgrade.

One of the bigger misconceptions in trading is that you need an informational edge, some insight, some pattern, some signal that others haven't found. If that's the game you're playing, you're competing against people with more data, more compute, and more capital than you'll ever have. You are not in that game, and pretending otherwise is the first mistake. The edge that's actually within reach looks nothing like that. It's (for the most part) doing what other people refuse to do, sitting in discomfort, absorbing volatility, providing liquidity to the person who simply wants out. You're not outsmarting anyone in a direct sense, but instead you're out-tolerating them. That's a less exciting framing, but it's a more honest one. The secret sauce most traders are searching for definitely exists somewhere, and they probably still couldn't execute it consistently even if they found it. The better question isn't what do I know that others don't, but what can I do that others won't.

I want to sell it all. I want to move to an island with my wife and baby, grow our own food, and enjoy the beach. I want to focus on my relationship with God, my family, and my friends. I want to get rid of my smartphone so I can fully live in the present. I am getting to a breaking point. No part of me wants to participate in this rat race any longer The matrix is eating away at my soul. I am going to be free. 2026 is the year I escape from the shackles of modern society. Time to start living on my own terms…
