@HFTVSports Things that never happened. The Habs rebuild was about 3 years. 4 & 5 years ago was the worst then it started to look hopeful & promising with excellent coaching & strong management. And the rest is history.

My personal opinion is that I want to deal with the “who” rather than the “how”. Not all the time, but most of the time. I heard @JShannonhl on his excellent 100% Hockey podcast saying he puts zero weight in Expected Goals stat. He thinks it's all nonsense. But have you considered this, John, that talking about Expected Goals brings more fairness and accuracy to discussions about a game, such as the Olympic final? Instead of talking about how "shots on goal" -- a stat everyone regularly mentions -- was 42 to 28 for Team Canada in the gold medal game, you add in one other factor -- the statistical likelyhood of each shot going in. We know a breakaway goes in about 30% of the time and a point shot about 3%. All shots are not the same, not even close, not by an order of magnitude. In this way, talking about shots on net can be misleading in describing a game. Expected Goals simply factor in the likelyhood of each shot going in. You add up those numbers at the end of the game, and you have the number of goals you'd expect from those quality of shots, on average. Is this not a fairer, more accurate way of describing shots on net. As a journalist of 45 years now, I'm all about fairness and accuracy, so I'm good talking about Expected Goals.
