@Kenneth604BC @BenSteiner00 No spine since Qatar squad only had 2 players from Caps academy. Only 2 BC-born but both didn't go to Caps academy. 86 squad had 60% BC-born with no academy. CANWNT has also seen BC players falloff but to a lesser degree. Youth women sides have seen a larger dropoff.

Steiner's right. The Whitecaps academy isn't just developing players — it's developing the spine of #CanMNT and #CanWNT. Toronto FC tonight: out of the Voyageurs Cup at the hands of a CPL side, in front of a half-empty BMO. Vancouver: 8-1-1, sold out, producing national team talent at every level. Move the wrong club, lose the right pipeline. #SaveTheCaps #VWFC

Toronto FC’s young players failed again tonight against Atlético Ottawa. If the Whitecaps relocate, there goes the much more productive academy for #CanMNT — and potentially #CanWNT talent. TFC, MTL, and all CPL clubs simply don’t have that structure that produces top players.

@SharonNadeem @TheAthletic The companion stadium guide articles are more comprehensive. Touristy guide coverage is just one sleeve of the World Cup coverage provided by The Athletic. Though, sponsored by StubHub.

@FightingStripes @TheAthletic Not saying they don’t. It’s a weird dynamic to promote an event that you are investigating and raises some questions on potential conflicts of interest.

I’m kinda new to the sports and politics beat but is it weird that @TheAthletic, which the NYT bought and basically replaced its sports investigative team is running ads for the very events that it’s supposed to look into?

With outstanding natural beauty, world-class entertainment options and superb fine dining, Vancouver has everything a fan could need. BC Place will host seven games at this summer's World Cup, including two for Canada. Brought to you by @CapitalOne

@n2henry Time not an issue. Cord cutting & less hours watching trad tv means not enough viewers/ad $ to warrant paying to fill more time. TSN still shows 42 Cdn MLS team games & 80+ overall. Way more than even hard cores ever watch.

I want to state upfront that this is a great deal for WNBA and the TEMPO re: TSN and i will definitely be watching. But this is also a downstream impact of the really bad deal MLS signed with Apple. TSN loss of all three MLS teams from there schedule opened up a ton of time

@__LFF__ @AsaRehman WJ happened as the heydays of cable tv got started. Growth mode = big budget/risk taking. Today, TSN has 50% less subs, ad $ gone online & majority of u35 don't watch trad tv. Secular decline mode means Rogers just offered buyout to 50% of staff & Bell laid off 8-9k in 5 yrs.

@AlNickel1 @ravira Nobody willing to build $200m+ stadium with heated grass pitch. Nobody willing to pay $500m expansion fee. NASL only survived 1 yr in Calgary.

@ravira A city like Calgary could easily support an MLS team. Two million in the metro area. Instead we have a CSL team in a 5000 seat stadium. Makes no sense to me why MLS doesn’t look at some Canadian cities. The weather might be an issue but Calgary gets Chinooks.

MLS, unlike the old NASL, seems like a league of posers to me. The NASL was unabashedly North American while the MLS tries to be British. Bring back the old nicknames the NASL had and let's talk about fields, uniforms, and shutouts instead of pitches, kits, and clean sheets.

@Kenneth604BC Attendance not a top 5 factor in Caps moving. But ticket prices in bottom 5 of MLS is an issue. Key issue is Caps aren't worth US$500m without a stadium. And MLS won't approve sale below $500m as it will mean a drop in expansion fees from what San Diego paid.

LA Galaxy v @WhitecapsFC. Kickoff. Plenty of empty seats again. Earlier today: Toronto FC drew 5,000 to a 45,000-seat BMO Field. Vancouver: near sellouts every weekend, 8-1-0 on the pitch. And @MLS thinks Vancouver is the relocation candidate? Read the room, @DonGarber. #SaveTheCaps #VWFC

@Kenneth604BC @WhitecapsFC @MLS @dongarber For starters there was 19k+ yesterday at BMO. Secondly using the temporary seating to back your point is embarrassing. Thirdly MLSE OWNS THE STADIUM while the Whitecaps haves to rent BC Place when they play. It’s not about the record it’s about the money to continue operation

@TheFlightMike Another issue is how broadcast rights are managed. I’m a casual Toronto Raptors fan, their games are split between BellMedia TSN & Rogers Sportsnet. People like me who subscribe to only one of these services miss half of the Raptors’ games.

One of the largest reasons the NBA is seeing a decline in viewership is this: They simply don’t respect the audiences time. They’re the only major sports league to begin a game 15-20 minutes after advertised…

@RomainSchue Then 90% of those FIFA profits are disbursed to 211 members/6 confeds as per being a non-profit. Qatar World Cup produced $18.4m for Canada Soccer via FIFA/Concacaf grants. Last yr, Canada Soccer got $1.5m in prize monies & $5.1m in FIFA/Concacaf grants.

@krisaug5 Nothing to talk about. It will still exist since it's pay to play. Caps just provide their branding, training curriculum & some coaching support. Caps get basically free feeder system since they can pluck players for their academy but don't pay solidarity payments.

One thing no one's talking about is how much Canadian soccer could lose with the possible Whitecaps relocation. The Caps academy is ~4800 players in 12 centres in 7 provinces. Lose that system and there's a good chance you lose the next Alphonso Davies or Ali Ahmed #SaveTheCaps

@10iceman40 @DomSramaty Underperformer. 60% of the 86 World Cup were BC-born. Only 2 on Qatar squad. 4 came via Caps academy. Includes 1 who left for TFC academy after being crtical of Caps. Likely only Davies on 26 squad will have come via Caps academy.

Approximately 4800 youth are enrolled in the Whitecaps academy system annually, and nearly 35,000 kids participate in camps and other grassroots initiatives… What’s going to happen to these programs if the Caps just leave? This is about more than just the pro club.

Does this Whitecaps owner know he is allowed to talk and express his feelings about how much he wants to keep his team in Vancouver and how much this city means to him and his team. Nothing but silence from Whitecaps ownership and that's pathetic.

@nogoodboyo_yvr Telus will then be like Rogers today offering buyouts to 10k employees after overspending buying Shaw & Bell's share of MLSE. And/or Telus will need to cut their high dividend which knockdown the stock even more.

At present time, the Caps are leaving (IMO). Nobody local stepping up… Plenty of rich bastards in the US ready to jump in with the necessary resources. Hope I’m wrong and there’s still some time for something to happen but I’m also a realist 🤷🏼‍♂️
