@30GotNext Call it what you like lad. You’re a decent side with what I’ve seen and you can only beat what’s put in front of you but you need to come up against a side that once you give the ball away to them, you’ll have a lot of trouble getting it back. Then you’ll know how good you are.

I might be the only American left with this point of view, but soccer is a horribly boring sport with hardly any scoring. I'd rather watch tennis and I don't give a damn about the world cup. Baseball is exciting by comparison.

@vishalmisra Agree completely! Football was only popular in Bengal, Goa and Kerala. Most others states hardly played the game. Gavaskar, Kapil Dev etc were household names and I di’s was decent at test cricket. Post ‘83 was when we emerged as a power in limited overs.

Complete fiction. Gavaskar was a legend years before the 83 World Cup. In primary school we rushed out at recess to listen to the commentary of Kapil decimating the Australians in the second innings at Melbourne in 1980. Football was never more popular in India than Cricket.

The two biggest reasons cricket became popular in India: 1. Very Very little competition, so it achieved success easily, which pushed the delusion among Indians that they were world-class. 2. The hype around India–Pakistan matches, which was directly linked to nationalism and other sentiments. This further embedded the idea that cricket = nationalism. Believe me the day India starts featuring in football world cup, European football powers will regret . Because if any sports gets popular in India then the commercials are mind boggling. Cricket has seen that!

Seems more than 70% of the attendees were pissed off. Which is apparently the non veg eating population in the country. (Defined by- at least eat eggs)

@gr180872 Cricket is not a team sport. Individual scores are added to make a team score. Score is like money. There is hardly any reason to think alike. Not so in football.

@sabeer Always wondered if it is diet, a scarcity mindset, lack of resources or maybe a combination of many factors (akin to death by a thousand cuts).
But hopefully now it is changing. I do see kids in school take up the sport. Maybe we’re one generation away from a FIFA WC appearance

@sabeer As a teen in the 1980s I saw great sporting talent around me told to focus on studies, abandon sport, music, art and dive headlong into the competitive exam rat race.
Our emergence in cricket has roots in our cricket WC triumph in 1983. Before that we were considered a joke.
