As many others are saying (@elipariser @VWPickard @zittrain @akrasodomsk) maybe this is a moment to reflect on whether a system dominated by wholly profit-orientated and unaccountable communications platforms has served us well and what alternatives aimed at public good could be

“We’re not suddenly inundated with research on what kinds of digital communities are healthy for young people, or funding to experiment with new networks that could help them cope with anxiety and social pressure”. Spot on as always from @EthanZ on the gaps in digital regulation

Everything about this is extremely insane. The idea that it is appropriate, even exciting!, for the prime minister to be deferential to a tech billionaire… the soft ball questions, the response that in the future there will be no jobs!! Mind boggling in both idea and execution.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asks Elon Musk about his thoughts on AI will impact the labour market. 'There will come a point were no job is needed', says Elon Musk - adding 'the new challenge will be: how do we find meaning a life?'. trib.al/27BskED 📺 Sky 501/ YouTube

"The AI safety summit is expected to focus almost entirely on existential risks... Sunak is understood to be deeply involved in the AI debate. “He’s zeroed in on it as his legacy moment. This is his climate change,” says one former government adviser." telegraph.co.uk/business/2023/…

From Rupert Murdoch’s ‘retirement’ statement. A paragraph which is about as dishonest as any you will read anywhere. Murdoch not only IS the elite, but ultimately decides what constitutes ‘the elite’ - gaslighting those who point out the dishonest

So grateful to @TimesMagazine for serialising my new book, Friendaholic. This is a deeply personal extract. I feel vulnerable sharing it, but I am very moved by those who have sent messages of kindness and who have walked this particular path. Thank you. thetimes.co.uk/article/9ead6d…

This is a great thread from @ellenejudson at @demos - particularly the question of - where is the citizen in digital policy making?
Ellen Judson@ellenejudson

a busy day of #BudgetDay2023! and what, you might ask, has that meant for tech and digital? Lots to think about from the new tech regulation and quantum reports - linked below. Read on for three things to celebrate, and three things I think are missing...🤓

@stevenjbarnett Agree 100% with this Steve. Media organisations are nothing if they cannot hold their nerve against political interference. Breathtaking to see.

I've spent most of my professional life defending the BBC, incl appointment of Tory donor chair and ex Tory DG. But this is spineless pandering to a hard right lobby by an institution that seems to have lost its moral compass. Indefensible. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-649205…
