“Please, I have come to make some clarification. Today makes it 24 days that we have been in this place. Some press media outlets are complicating the issue by stating that the people who abducted us requested N1 billion ransom and demanded Sharia law across the country. These claims are not true…….” Abducted principal, Rachael Alamu of Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle.

This is one of the most sobering lessons in Scripture because Moses was arguably one of the most faithful servants of God in the Old Testament. Yet he was not permitted to enter the Promised Land. The key event is recorded in Numbers 20:7-12. God instructed Moses to speak to the rock so that water would come out. Instead, Moses became angry with the people and struck the rock twice with his staff. God then said: "Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them." (Numbers 20:12, KJV) Why was the punishment so severe? 1. Moses represented God before the people. Leaders are held to a higher standard because they influence others' understanding of God. Moses' anger gave the impression that the miracle came from him and Aaron rather than from God. He said: "Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?" (Numbers 20:10) The issue was not merely striking a rock. It was misrepresenting God's character before the nation. 2. Partial obedience is still disobedience God said "speak." Moses "struck." The difference may seem small to us, but obedience is not measured by how close we come to God's instruction; it is measured by whether we do what He says. This teaches that sincerity and a long history of faithfulness do not exempt anyone from obedience. 3. The rock had prophetic significance According to Paul the Apostle in 1 Corinthians 10:4, the rock symbolized Christ. The rock had already been struck once in Exodus 17. Christ would be smitten once for our salvation. After that, believers come to Him by faith, not by striking Him again. Many Bible teachers see Moses' action as disrupting this prophetic picture. Does this mean God rejected Moses? No. This is important. Moses lost the privilege of leading Israel into Canaan, but he did not lose his relationship with God. In Deuteronomy 34, God personally showed him the land before his death. Even more significantly, centuries later Moses appeared with Elijah on the Mount of Transfiguration with Jesus Christ (Matthew 17:1-3). That scene demonstrates that Moses remained a beloved servant of God. A deeper lesson Moses' story teaches that: Faithfulness in the past does not eliminate the need for obedience today. Spiritual leaders are accountable for how they represent God. God can discipline His children while still loving them deeply. A single failure does not erase a lifetime of faithful service, but actions still have consequences. As a Christian, I would summarize it this way: Moses was not barred from the Promised Land because God stopped loving him. He was barred because God's holiness required accountability. Yet even in discipline, God honored Moses, remained close to him, and ultimately welcomed him into a far greater inheritance than earthly Canaan.

As a Christian, how would you explain this: why was Moses not allowed to enter the Promised Land after serving God so faithfully?
