The scary thing isn't how many don't read nowadays, but how many can't. It's gotten a point beyond willpower. They've polluted their brains to such a degree that even the will to read simply can't grow there anymore. It's like asking a rose to bloom in a bucket of sand

Andrej Karpathy just dropped a project scoring every job in America on how likely an AI will replace it from 0-10 > Scraped all 342 occupations from the Bureau of Labor > Fed each one to an LLM with a detailed scoring rubric > Built an interactive treemap where rectangle size = number of jobs and color = how exposed that job is to AI The key signal in his scoring: if the work product is fundamentally digital and the job can be done entirely from a home office, exposure is inherently high. The scale: 0-1: Roofers, janitors 4-5: Nurses, retail, physicians 8-9: Software devs, paralegals, data analysts 10: Medical transcriptionists Average across all 342 occupations: 5.3/10. The entire pipeline is open source. BLS scraping, LLM scoring, the visualization. All of it. Much respect for the sensei this is scary and awesome

the fear of ai replacing you reminds me of being scared your juniors will take your job.
except… as you grow in your career, you're supposed to uplevel. directors and VPs don't stay afraid of being replaced by juniors - they learn to think higher-level.

It is strange to imagine this today, but one day AI companies might dictate terms to the US government instead of the other way around. We have only seen a glimpse of what AI is capable of. No matter what the future holds, I hope we’ll continue to live in a democratic society.

sometime in 2025 i just stopped taking pictures.
i guess it wasn’t a choice i was necessarily aware of but just noticed the impulse had gone quiet. i shot half as much as the year before, & posted nothing to insta. i don’t know whether this was cuz ai made photos feel a bit cheap or whatever.
not it feels slightly strange standing in places where everyone around me has their phones out, & i rarely ever do.
