So @CapitalOne fraud management has been incredibly frustrating, denying my claim of almost $1000 in obvious fraud with no appeals process. I have a police report and proof I was out of state at the time and they told me too bad. Closing my accounts. Stay away.

@benedictevans The best speculative example here is NFTs for useful things, like hats in Fortnite or digital video games. Imagine my Xbox library was owned by NFTs. EA can’t legally sell NCAA Football 14 anymore, so DVDs online cost $200. Would an NFT copy be resell-able like the discs are?

@benedictevans That’s fair. There’s a continuum of value-adds to copyable works. Numbered editions and signed books… still physically limited, even if the artist has more control. It’s still a physical thing you can resell.

True, but an over emphasis on plane danger (in name of safety) could have stalled air travel industry before it took off. Nuclear power is a good example of a technology with real safety issues that suffered from an abundance of caution, which in long run made world less safe!
Amanda Askell@AmandaAskell

You don't need to be deeply pessimistic about AI to think it's good to work on AI safety, just like you don't need to be deeply pessimistic about planes to think it's good to work on aviation safety. Risk reduction is valuable across a wide range of risk estimates.

@AdamSinger @Bitfinexed Too many industries are way too slow to wake up to the fact that their business is as much software as the other thing they do, and until they do, it won’t get better.

Tech nerds: let's build things that let you trade monkeys in the metaverse, bc we hate actually interacting with the world, while execs howl into the wind about nebulously 'working harder' but can't even express 'why' Meanwhile, IRL, actual industries need you. Time to grow up..

This piece by a Southwest captain is fascinating. You’d be surprised how many huge companies operate with horrific systems and procedures. Can you imagine dispatching 20,000 employees by phone call?

Tough loss for Team USA vs the Dutch. But now we have to replace our highways with bike lanes. Sorry, those are just the rules of the World Cup.

IRS: You owe us 10 cents. Me: Oh for the love of. IRS: You are required to use EFTPS to pay for this variety of tax. Me: EFTPS will not let me pay because... IRS: Then pay by check; 10% penalty. Me: To confirm: you want a total of ELEVEN CENTS. BY CHECK. IRS: Yes and hurry up.

Someone sent me this after my BBS Mastodon joke. What is this? Is this a fax machine? Why were fax machines in prehistoric times so small and now they are massive?

@johnhugg Exactly. My husband used to work at FB. Every family dinner, same story: "I told my friend that I want to buy socks and suddenly I see ads for socks. Clearly FB are listening to my calls. How do I get them to stop?" No explanation helped because trust and narrative.

Agree. It is actually a better product without FB. The camera literally follows you around, so its better if the owners would be trusted not to collect and sell private info.

Players need to face down FIFA over this. If a captain is booked for wearing a OneLove armband, both teams should leave the pitch until the card is recinded. Delays would cause chaos in global tv schedules and draw greater attention to LGBTQ+ rights and FIFA's malfeasance.
The Washington Post@washingtonpost

Soccer teams representing seven European nations at the World Cup have announced their captains will no longer wear the OneLove armband in Qatar after FIFA, which organizes the tournament, said players sporting the bands would be sanctioned. wapo.st/3TUKDaU
