Trump is "stealing" $750 million from NATO countries. This $750 million maneuver is further evidence of transatlantic friction under Trump: Europe pays, the US decides flexibly according to its own priorities. It's annoying, partly unfair to the contributing countries, and undermines credibility. But it's not an "expropriation" of already delivered weapons, but rather a shift in distribution priorities. Europe should learn from this: The right response is to build strategic autonomy for Europe. And one more thing—Trump is anything but a reliable partner.

Learn to READ before reacting. The story makes it crystal clear that this is a matter of WHEN Europe's orders on behalf of Ukraine will be fulfilled not WHETHER the weapons will be supplied to Kyiv. It's true that, deep in the story, the WaPo muddles the distinction between prioritizing U.S. needs ahead of Ukraine's and the question of using European money to buy U.S. weapons for U.S. use. Noch nicht verstanden? Stell dir vor, du und deine Nachbarn legen zusammen Geld in eine gemeinsame Kasse – zweckgebunden für Schutzausrüstung für eure Freundin, die gerade angegriffen wird. Der einzige Laden, der diese Ausrüstung verkauft, heißt USA. Jetzt greift der USA-Laden in die Kasse, kauft die Ausrüstung – und behält sie selbst. Weil er gerade selbst Streit mit jemandem hat. Und erklärt euch: "Die Umstände haben sich geändert." Und das Dreisteste: Laut einem US-Beamten war unklar, ob die europäischen Einzahler überhaupt wussten, dass ihr Geld umgewidmet wurde.

We desperately need as many participants as possible for the PURL program, a vital lifeline for Ukraine’s air defense. But now the US has just reallocated $750 million to refill its own rapidly depleting stockpiles, drained by the war in the Middle East. They’re cynically calling it “reprioritization.” Apparently that’s perfectly fine under American rules. @SecGenNATO says: “The PURL program is continuing as planned.” Yet he hasn’t said a single word about this $750 million betrayal. How about we “reprioritize” the funding for Ukraine’s air defense interceptors for the United States too? Unbelievable. 😤
