It's also an aesthetic nightmare. Very important things happen on the phone, but showing the audience a phone screen is boring af.

The reason so many shows are set in the 80s and 90s is cellphones make like 50% of plots obsolete. Contact anyone at any time, find almost any piece of knowledge, it's very difficult to get lost. Same reason Star Trek has "oh, communications are blocked" every 2nd episode.

@jmiester26 @jordanbhx No. Birmingham is bigger than Manchester if you measure it on municipal borders. But on that standard, Birmingham is 80 times *bigger* than London, suggesting it's not a very useful standard.

@jordanbhx I mean, isn't Birmingham factual Britain's second city when measured by pop size? It was the place given to me in school. 34% of people choosing another place is either because they don't know that information or have chosen to ignore it, thats fairly impressive.

@Saberkross Yes, pretty much. I've read two autobiographies from the 1910s where the YMCA/YWCA were still very obviously organisations where Christian young people attended Bible studies, etc. But they didn't have any explicit theological standards so the national HQs became secular liberals

Arirang's Simply K-Pop will be returning on April 10th. The show previously took a break back on August 2025 due to low viewership.

@1he0pposite @Discoplomacy The bus tracking data has been available for years; the hard part of getting trackers (i.e. modern ticket machines) onto all the buses had been done. But the general public didn't know. The innovation here has been getting Google's marketing muscle on board.

@Discoplomacy This isn't ai, though. The fact that this wasn't a thing before is strange as it is common in Europe.

it's kinda incredible how sign language had the chance to be a universal language of deaf people, but instead not only did we keep different languages unintelligible we also made it so that americans can't even understand british people

@crispsident @ChiOnwurah It's not new but you'd never know it existed unless you're a transport enthusiast or regular bus commuter. Getting Google's marketing muscle about it had worked, because the OP is just one of many tweets from people who never knew about it before.

@ChiOnwurah I love all these tweets thinking this is sonething new, I live up north and I’ve used bustimes.org for years, and will continue to do so. It isn’t a technological wasteland up here, you know!

@RugbyLeeds Well done! Most of them would never be able to afford a match ticket so they get a taste of RL and are either potential future supporters for your club or might take an interest in RL back to their home countries.

@Creepalexx @cmw2003 Pretty much every bus in the UK already does, but you had to know about a (free) website, BusTimes. Now it will be available on Google Maps, which has been extensively advertised.

@CoKeynesian @bryancsk It would make sense if they used a dredger to keep the harbour or a sea lane clear and then dumped the spill into the Changi reclamation.

@harry_jrh Google bus tracking is leagues behind BusTimes and other open source platforms. It takes weeks for changes to bus stop locations, names, etc to feed through and the data feed for times themselves is updated far less frequently than the BODS feed into BusTimes

@sargo_dy @tc1415 Yes, it was common in the 2010s. I went on several courses where that branding was on the documents we had to sign acknowledging the funding.

@tc1415 I meant as a particular design of branding, not just as a sentence. The "Funded by UK Government" branding has been around for a few years. "Powered by Levelling Up" was used alongside it before the election.

@Columba521 @ElshadKarbasi I use HMG, but it infuriates Irish Nationalists and causes confusion in international contexts and with less well educated people here. If you use "UK Government", everybody immediately understands, which is the main aim.

@BruvverEccles @ElshadKarbasi I use HM Government, but it infuriates Irish Nationalists and is confusing in international contexts, so the UK Government is probably sensible to use it as a compromise that everybody understands immediately.

@ElshadKarbasi In any case it's His Majesty's Government, funded by the taxpayer.

@AaronBastani @ElshadKarbasi It was introduced to emulate the EU's similar requirement that projects that they funded say so. The Eurosceptic members of the coalition government hated the fact that people could easily see the tangible benefits of EU membership.

@ElshadKarbasi The local authority is also funded by / an extension of HM government. It’s about distinguishing LA and Westminster funding I imagine.

@privatemarkg @esc_asia But they have a thousand hours of footage that doesn't show contestants holding European flags (which is only a tradition dating back to 2015 anyway). If I was trying to persuade some Vietnamese Communist Party official to let me broadcast, I'd want zero European flags.

@Simon_Gleaden @rorysutherland According to Ofcom, this is enough for broadcasters to prove that they have announced to viewers that the programme content may have been changed for cash. It's a mockery.

@Simon_Gleaden @rorysutherland It's a symbol of a P for "Product Placement", shown briefly in the opening seconds of the intro. It's always shown translucent so even if you know it's there and you're looking for it, it's very easy to miss.
