When I tell people I think private capital is ruining journalism, this is what I mean. I joined Defense News in May 2021 with a vibrant combined DN/MilTimes staff of about three dozen. They’re now down to three staff reporters. This is bad for journalism and bad for readers.

This is truly horrible news for the defense trade press community (both the reporters that keep it vibrant, and the wide spectrum of readers that consume and reply upon high-quality defense and military journalism).

As of this week, @Militarydotcom as we knew it is effectively dead. Talented journalists and other guild members were fired Wednesday evening, and others have been pushed out. Several who are gone are veterans. (1/4)

I think @SecDef just opened the door to a wave of embed requests! He says the Pentagon press corps should do more stories on how hard it is to serve in the military and conduct missions. Reporters want to tell these stories, too — OSD, please say yes when reporters ask to embed!
