I’m heading to a Commerce Committee markup today, in part because I’ve been reporting for the last few days on a very interesting saga around a Coast Guard promotion. Buckle up, because this will be a long thread here:

Hegseth gutted offices that would have probed Iran school strikes dlvr.it/TRQ8DY

We have agreed to quadruple critical munitions production. As a result of President @realDonaldTrump's leadership, we began this work months ago with @SecWar Hegseth and Deputy Secretary Feinberg.

"It could last six days, six weeks. I doubt six months." — Donald Rumsfeld on the Iraq War (7 Feb 2003).

Trump admin officials acknowledged during a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill Tuesday that Iran’s Shahed attack drones represent a major challenge and US air defenses will not be able to intercept them all. The drones, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine acknowledged, are posing a bigger problem than anticipated, per sources in the briefing. cnn.com/2026/03/04/pol…

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Asked if there are any boots on the ground in Iran, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says, "No but we're not going to go into the exercise of what we will or will not do." Says it is "one of the fallacies" that "this department or presidents or others should tell the American people — and our enemies, by the way — 'here's exactly what we'll do.'" "It's foolishness," he says.
