@HistoryInPics This radio telescope was in Delaware, OH north of Columbus and there is now a golf course at the location. Perkins Observatory remains next door.

Back in 1977, Ohio State University’s Big Ear Radio telescope used to support the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence received a signal that is now known as the “Wow!” signal. Astronomer Jerry R. Ehman discovered the anomaly while looking at the data and he was so amused by the signal he circled it and wrote “Wow!” next to it. The signal is 72-seconds long and, unfortunately, it has never been repeated again. To this day nobody can explain the signal even though many tried by claiming it might have come from a man-made source. This signal remains the strongest candidate for an alien contact ever detected.

Went to Tony’s Italian in Columbus and saw they have been in business 42 years. When I commented that 37 years ago I came here for HS prom, they told me that they had manual reservation books for every year. Sure enough, there it was, May 2 1987 at 700 with @roamstudio.

Some Personal News (TM) Today is my last day at cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer after almost exactly 11 years. That's a really long time! I never thought I would write for what I consider my hometown paper much less spend more than a decade doing so.

@EricMarkowitz Great perspective. My father died of a Stage 4 glioblastoma, age 46. Glad your family was spared that experience. Had my own benign brain tumor removed via craniotomy four years later, definitely shifts priorities and perspectives.

The experience has profoundly shifted my perspective on playing the long game, and I hope it's a perspective that will help others think about as they go through life. Slow down. The long game is... long. But only if you're lucky. The future isn't guaranteed. I'm so much more grateful for the small things. The small things are the good things. The world is complex and, yes, has many problems. But I'm just happy to be here. I wish you all health, and good luck, in that order. I'll be writing more, so feel free to follow along. Today I'm sharing a very personal story. I hope that by sharing it, I might help someone else in the world. In February 2023, I underwent emergency brain surgery to remove what — at the time — my doctors thought could be a stage 4 glioblastoma tumor: terminal brain cancer. I was 35, married, with an 18-month-old daughter...

I am getting calls on an upcoming vacancy but couldn’t figure out why. We hadn’t advertised it yet. Turns out, the outgoing tenants found old For Rent sign in basement & put it out trying to be helpful. We have a good relationship so appreciate the gesture! Not ready yet though!

We are NOT following Nikki Haley to Trump. She is walking to him alone. That’s why this makes no sense for her, unless she’s doing it solely for a Trump spot. She is walking away from the people she led and her people are staying put on principle. Someone else will lead them.

@leo_szac If partial rent is even at issue, there’s usually warning signs and other problems prior to that. I accept Zelle because it’s effectively a free wire transfer with no clearing time. But it isn’t my main method which is ACH via @azibo_inc

Some landlords do not accept Zelle, Venmo, or wire transfers, arguing that tenants could make partial payments that can't be blocked. What are your thoughts on this?

🚨ANNOUNCEMENT🚨 I am launching a program to help other people in the SMB Community launch local meetups in their city. I will be doing a shit load of work, 100% for free. All to unite the SMB/ETA community. I love this community and I’m inspired as hell right now. If you want the full story of “what this is” and “why I’m doing it”, keep reading… It all starts with this tweet: For some reason, Reg thought it would be a good idea for me to help promote @kylederstler's Denver SMB meetup. and you know what they say… “When life gives you lemons, fly to Denver.” During that event, I met one of the guys in my peer groups who I had never before seen in person. We had built a relationship over ~2 years through zoom calls. Celebrating wins together, commiserating losses, sharing tactical advice, going through the full gamut of the SMB ownership experience. Seeing him in person was a cathartic and really special moment. Leaving Denver, I had a new perspective on the value of local relationships. The question kept popping up in my head: “If these communities and events are so valuable, so fun… Why don’t they exist everywhere?” Still shocks me. So I said F it, I’ll start them. This was the route, we hosted events in 15 different cities. ~300 people ended up coming out. We branded this trip "The Rand Run" because I love naming things in fun ways. city by city, I hosted events helping people meet each other, everyone learning new things, everyone having tons of fun. and I kept coming back to that question… “Seriously, why isn’t everyone doing this?!” Well, I started asking people that question in every city I hosted in, and eventually I found the answer… “I am too busy” “I don’t know how” “I don’t know enough people to invite” So, I hear about these problems… And I consider myself an entrepreneur, right? someone who solves problems? AND I found something that everyone loves, but few are willing to put energy into, right? Well, shit, I have tons of energy, and I love this shit! What if I scaled this, solved those problems for other people anywhere in the U.S., and helped them host an event in their city? So that’s what this program is all about. I am looking for people who want to host SMB/ETA meetup events in their local city. I call it “SMB Community Local Leaders” Some details: Why should you want to host an event? 1. Everyone LOVES attending them People desire connection with like-minded people and they can’t find it elsewhere. You can be the person who brings it to them. 2. Everyone is incredibly thankful for the host After every single event I’ve hosted, most people seek me out to shake my hand and thank me because of such a fun time they had that night. It’s an odd experience, but at this point my reputation is growing as “the person who brings people together for a fun night.” I believe that a local reputation like this is powerful, and you should be the one cultivating it. 3. Opportunities, Serendipity, and Luck Being the host is like a magic machine for bringing luck into your life. I’ve made connections with people I otherwise wouldn’t have, I’ve been lucky to meet people giving me good ideas (like this program) to grow my business, and my reputation is growing in an interesting way I couldn’t have predicted. Tons of benefits from hosting a local happy hour… who would have thought. But still, the problems with actually getting started exist. Which is where I come in! 1. If you are too busy, I will do 90% of the work for you. All you have to do is show up with nametags and sharpies. 2. If you don’t know how, I will show you. (It’s easy). 3. If you don’t know enough people to invite, I will find them for you. I’ve done all of this in 15 cities, most of which I had never visited before. I can certainly help you do it in yours. In fact, I’ve already started this program in 10 more cities: West Palm Beach, FL San Francisco, CA Birmingham, AL Las Vegas, NV Charlotte, NC Nashville, TN Portland, OR Madison, WI Atlanta, GA Dallas, TX That means 10 other people will be consistently hosting SMB/ETA meetups in cities without current meetups happening. Additionally… I’m going through all the cities I’ve already hosted meetups in, I’m electing other local leaders to take ownership of their community, and we’re starting a big group chat to share fun stories and pictures of all these events across North America. Hopefully, over time, we will all build communities similar to what @RegZeller, @shawnwallard, @AdamMarkleySMB, and @guessworkinvest have built in their respective cities. At the end of the day, I'm doing this because I think it acts as a feature of the business I'm building. - private virtual peer groups - free local SMB meetups, everywhere in the U.S. - eventually much more Incentives are everything here. I am incentivized to grow the SMB Community, which means ultimately bringing local community and connection to others who do not have it. I think this is a good thing and I love doing it. Again, it's 100% free, but I will be vetting the Local Leaders. AND because I love fun branding… Yes, this next series of events will have a fun name attached to it… I bring you… The SEQUEL to... The CLASSIC hit series, “The Rand Run” THIS IS… The RAND RUN PART 2: The RANDYER!! If you want to be Randyer with me, comment on this post or DM me with your city and let’s start building your local SMB Community.
