@JustDeezGuy @CoqLang @DrAllyLouks I think the focus of lean on mathematics in general has been very successful but led to this chasm with formal methods and PLT people when lean decided to just make setoids work and damn the (admittedly rare) theoretical issue

@are_muc @JDHamkins I am sure you know all these facts, I just want to present this narrative: the halting problem should have produced a paradigm shift just like Russel’s paradox, but it was dodged.

Quiz in my Infinity class. Give a self-contained argument that the set of real numbers is uncountable. Be sure to state exactly what this means, and probably it would be good to mention the name of the kind argument you are providing.

@are_muc @JDHamkins Not constructively. There are only countably many, but you can’t actually count them out.

@SnowFake3 @JDHamkins Because all the added ones are fake you can put in as many as you like. This problem infects everything from then on. The culprit is classical logic, the solution is understanding that LEM died with Hilbert when Turing found a counterexample

@SnowFake3 @JDHamkins No, we can discuss hypothetical objects and sometimes manipulate them symbolically. I will make an explicit claim: the reason the continuum hypothesis is indeterminate is because the continuum is subcountable existing reals and then a bunch of fake ones.

It’s funny In Star Wars that typically whenever a member of an alien species first appears in the films, most subsequent media will proceed to portray whatever occupation they had as a major part of their species’ lore and have other members in that job There’s a joke to be made there

@ThatchEffendi GRRM is so good at plotting he just left mereen alone before deciding the series was not fixable and abandoning it wholesale

I'm not sure Dune inspired Game of Thrones. I think what happened is that both GRRM and Herbert are eccentric hyper-horny autodidacts who had their childhoods ruined by Catholicism and made it the world's problem. They're similar people, even if GRRM is better at plotting and Herbert is better at world building and vastly more intelligent.

Christianity was "invented" by Jesus Christ you literal fucking retard.

@travisrusko @mattsheffield No, Christianity was invented by white supremacists to hate. They don’t preach a type of God but they’re evil

@realLPBeria In Orion’s Arm after the first mental singularity is breached creating intelligences that are incomparably more “aware” than previously, there is a current of thought that S<1 beings are not really conscious. The the second singularity is breached 👌

Silicon Valley’s best and brightest are using the simulation hypothesis to argue that the rest of us aren't actually conscious. Ofc, they don't want to act on this. For now, at least. We can *definitely* trust the people who secretly suspect this to give us UBI in perpetuity.

@Ngnghm If you write your system as functions and then prove those functions correct separately, you will have a better time than if you try to make types that cannot be used correctly. Cool when it works but every change requires an artisanal data type at best

My experience with less-than-dependent types is that of "The Bear and the Gardener": an idiot friend who does heavy lifting for you, but will kill you trying to eliminate a bug. My experience with dependent types is that they are too much work for an overly rigid result.

@timotheeology These letters are before the Disputation Of Paris when the Talmud became widely known to Christendom thanks to a convert, Nicolas Donin, who informed the pope. Much writing before then was people assuming “Jews” were still doing some sort of second temple thing.

Timothy Gordon (Rules for Retrogrades Show)
Jews are indeed our "elder brothers in the Faith." But not in the way John Paul II tried to finagle it: Pope Innocent III taught that Jews bear the "mark of Cain," murderous elder brother who squandered his faith-inheritance and passed it on to his faithful younger brother.
