@stackerco Noted :) Just wondering if playing hard to get has any place in gospel fellowship. Sometimes we might be a little too desperate / needy kinda like horny byu boy.

Sitting along a river, w/quiet sounds of running water and birds, is soothing. There is the regularity of it in time and volume - it doesnโ€™t shock you. But probably also there is something in us designed to take these sounds. The asshole w/the loud motorcycle should be shot.

If โ€œnatureโ€ is in us and governs how we organize and behave, then why is Marxism not also just a phenomenon of nature? What makes some human behavior โ€œartificialโ€ and some natural? He probably has some answers. Enjoyed the read. Points to cosmic purpose and/or God. Liberty for the win.

Could rules of physics apply to social sciences, i.e. flow theory? Is there a hard science explanation for the invisible hand and spontaneous order in human relations? Is social harmony created entirely by implicit human threats of force, or something more "natural" and fundamental? realclearpolitics.com/articles/2026/โ€ฆ You may not fully agree with Duke prof Adrian Bejan's "constructal law" but it's nice to see physics envy work in the other direction for once. And he's a big supporter of our friend of Bob Luddy & CaptiveAire.

@realDrTT We do worship Jesus Christ. Honestly, Nicea ainโ€™t so problematic for the gospel message. The Protestant reformation was more corrosive.

LDS theology teaches that the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are three distinct beings united in purpose rather than one divine essence. They worship only the Heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, and do not pray to or worship any other gods. But you knew that already. So, yes. We were worshipping the same God.
Damian Thompson@holysmoke

The LDS believe in many gods and also teach that the Lord Jesus is a separate being from God the Father. So perhaps you could clarify whether you were all worshipping the same Lord.

Although many latter day saints would agree with Trevorโ€™s summary, itโ€™s not actually so cut and dry. We do worship Jesus Christ. When it comes to the loss of plain and precious truths of the gospel, The Nicene Creed, in my opinion, is the least of our concerns. So many scriptures in the Book of Mormon sound basically trinitarian. Far more hazardous are ideas like: - God is without body, parts, or passions. (Westminster) - God is impassable. (Augustine) - Man is predestined for heaven or hell. (Westminster) Those ideas consequentially change how we relate to God and how we worship him. They distort the simple truths we should have learned from Godโ€™s incarnation.

@realDrTT Thereโ€™s plenty of praying to Jesus in the Book of Mormon. Insisting we only pray to the father is kind of autistic IMO. Donโ€™t think God really cares. Relatedly, Iโ€™d love to hear a Catholicโ€™s reaction to Mosiah chapter 15. Sounds kinda trinitarian. Curious if youโ€™d agree.

Just exploring here. I resist the definition โ€œmind dependentโ€ for the word subjective. Maybe because I donโ€™t quite believe in objectivity in the same way you might. Common usage of โ€œsubjectiveโ€ is: preference based. By that standard, my original statement stands. Would you agree that seeing red and liking red are conceptually different? They sort of exist on different levels, seeing red being primary.

@notboughtbot @Philip_Goff We have real experiences in us. That is subjective. Subjective = mind/stance dependent. If there is no experiencer (i.e. a mind), there is nothing which can be experienced.

@Your_Wrongest @Philip_Goff By โ€œnot subjectiveโ€ I mean: real, veridical, truthful. You might say awareness and qualia are essentially illusions. But the notion of โ€œobjectivityโ€ is far more tenuous, requiring many more leaps and assumptions. If you disagree I can only conclude that you must be a zombie.

@Philip_Goff Qualia is a phenomena that exists in us. Therefore, it is subjective (not mind/stance independent).

I spent a chunk of my early years around Mormons and they were in general exemplary people. Solid families, friendly and open. If I had one complaint it would be aggressive proselytizing - which even happened on the school bus. But that is also a healthy sign of confidence in their way of life. Exact discussions of their theology strike me as beside the point when they frequently live more โ€˜Christian livesโ€™ than men serving as Jesuit priests or leaders of prosperity gospel megachurches - which are basically a Sunday infomercial.

Mormons proselytize aggressively because, deep down, they know theyโ€™re following a con man and a fake text. Their house of cards could collapse at any moment. Going out and finding gullible new recruits is the only practical way to counter the losses they have when their own people realize theyโ€™ve been lied to all their lives, and quit. You donโ€™t have to follow a con man to lead a decent life.

@redeemed_zoomer The flag of Utah has a beehive on it to represent industriousness and unity. But perhaps it also captures the values of being a hive mind and unquestioningly obeying authority.

Are Mormons in some kinda hypnotic trance or smth? I get a very unsettling vibe from them. They're so polite but when they talk about their religion they give off North Korean cheerleader energy

@ThomasEWoods โ€” You've said you'll likely move to New Hampshire someday. Just a suggestion from a supporter: before you do, spend a week in Utah. The Free Staters may share some political goals, but I'm not sure they're really your people. Utah has strong families, beautiful mountains, low taxes, and a lot of people who appreciate your work. Attend Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine, visit the national parks, and host one of your dinner parties. What could it hurt?

Short term pain for long term gainโ€ฆ I say do it. If they think they donโ€™t have to change because you will vote for them no matter what they do or say because they have an R by their name, then they have no reason to change. So long term, voting for the lesser of 2 evils doesnโ€™t work. It is a short term solution that causes decades of suffering. The party will only change if they have to. So, make them.
