@ShitpostRock gamers don't know that some developers just do not attempt any optimizations because the game still sells even when it runs like ass, and that's gamers that keep giving them money for it.

@ZynOpsII @ZeroZerich @TenDesiderantes No one I have come across has ever done that, they've tried and hated it. They end up playing it on an existing windows machine since windows runs like ass everywhere it goes, and it shows especially on lower end hardware like steam decks.

For those wondering what's wrong with the Steam Machine. I'll make a small list... -Price to Performance is out of whack. (Aka it's overpriced and you can build a cheaper similar system) -The Steam Machine is a open ecosystem instead of closed. (More on my reasoning in the comments) -Not including a Steam Controller anyways with its ridiculous base price. -The Hardware is already out of date. -Not subsidized even a little bit to make it more available to gamers (Valve would have STILL made a massive profit even if the Steam Machine were to be subsidized. Valve takes almost a %30 cut of almost every game. They could easily afford to lose $200–$300 on every physical box sold, because a single active gamer can easily generate that much revenue for Valve. Valve makes BILLIONS via game sales and live services and DLC. It's more profitable than Apple, Google, Microsoft and/or Netflix.) As much as I love Valve. I cannot defend this piece of junk. Sorry not Sorry.

Valve has confirmed that Steam Deck 2 is in development, but it is not ready yet.
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “We’re working towards our next gen for sure,” and added, “We’ll definitely be talking about that in the coming years.”
Valve wants Steam Deck 2 to be a major upgrade with much better performance and battery life, rather than a small improvement.
The company is waiting for hardware that can deliver a true next-generation experience.

A Valve employee says buying RAM has become much harder due to the ongoing memory shortage and rising demand from AI companies. According to the employee, memory suppliers come to Valve once a month with a price and a set amount of RAM they can buy. Valve either accepts the deal or passes on it. If the company says no, the suppliers usually don’t come back with another offer. “Look, there’s no contracts. There’s nothing. Those guys… they give us a price every month or something and they say, ‘you can buy that many,’ and it’s yes or no. And if we say no, then they never talk to us again.” The company says the current market has made hardware components much more expensive than usual.

@packet_manager @MoshiMoshiMoan If AI demand cools off, RAM prices could definitely come down. But I wouldn't count on a dramatic crash. Data centers, enterprise demand, and consumer markets all influence pricing, so it's unlikely we'll go back to the ultra-cheap memory prices of a few years ago anytime soon.

I wanted the Steam Machine to succeed.
The moment Valve announced it, I thought:
"This could finally be the PC that replaces a console in the living room."
Then the price dropped.
$1,049.
And suddenly, all that excitement turned into one question...
"Why would I buy this instead of building a better gaming PC?"
That's the problem.
Not because the Steam Machine is bad.
Far from it.
It's beautifully engineered, incredibly compact, whisper quiet, runs SteamOS, gives you access to your entire Steam library, supports mods, emulation, desktop mode, free online multiplayer, and doesn't lock you into a closed ecosystem.
Valve deserves credit for that.
While everyone else is trying to lock players into subscriptions and exclusives, Valve is betting on openness.
I respect that.
But respecting the philosophy doesn't make the price easier to justify.
At over $1,000, you're no longer competing with consoles.
You're competing with custom-built PCs.
And that's a fight the Steam Machine struggles to win.
For the same money, you can build something faster.
More powerful.
More upgradeable.
That's the uncomfortable truth.
I honestly believe if Valve had launched this at around $699, the conversation today would be completely different.
People would be calling it revolutionary.
Instead, most people are calling it overpriced.
The saddest part?
The Steam Machine isn't failing because it's a bad product.
It's failing because Valve priced a niche dream like a mainstream device.
And that's a mistake even great hardware can't overcome.

@MoshiMoshiMoan @Techjunkie_Aman I can foresee a price drop after the angry mob of gamers beheads sam altman, causing the ai bubble to burst, deflating ram prices back to reasonable levels after the vendors come crawling back to the consumer market.

I think Valve got caught in unfortunate circumstances where development of a good product intersected with crazy fluctuations in parts pricing. They were already commited to a timeframe for release but got hammered by rising ram and other ai driven demands. I have no doubt in another timeline with no ai mania this product would ship for 650 to 750 and have done well.
