Welcome to pkgx, the dev tool that runs anything, anywhere. A single binary that executes commands in any language, runs specific package versions or entire dev environments, across all platforms. Like npx is to JavaScript, pkgx is to everything else.

Not too long ago we crushed the milestone of 1,200 packages, and today we're crushing the milestone of 1,300 packages. Thank you to @arionthinker for his amazing contributions

We pkg’d up @astral_sh’s new `uv` within 48 hours. An extremely fast Python package installer and resolver, written in Rust. Will `uv` fix the issues with the Python ecosystem? We don’t know—but we know @charliermarsh and if anyone can do it it’s him. pkgx.dev/pkgs/astral.sh…

More on @pkgxdev If Kernighan and Ritchie had written "The C Programming Language" today, I am pretty sure a cow would have done the talking. Here's a screen shot of getting to "Hello World" the hard way as I confirm how this would work with Python virtual environments. I have some applications that require container-based servers built on various Python or Javascript packages. In the case of Python, recent updates make it harder to install packages by default in the "main" environment. While this is intended to help users keep things separate, it can be a bit frustrating if running in a Docker container. I see some great use cases for pkgx here. Indeed they have thought of this and have great Docker support - see docs.pkgx.sh/run-anywhere/d…. Before going to my real use case, I decided to confirm my understanding of how this works. I'm testing by using pkgx and the implicit environment it creates to install a Python package using pip. I've done something similar with pipenv as well. Those using pipx, pipenv and similar tools know you have to set the path in order to get the benefit. I find that a bit annoying in Docker containers since we sometimes have to switch to a different user and may have different profile source files depending on root OS (run "pipx ensurepath" to see what I mean). So, I'm interested in a smoother way of doing this.
