@RomeoLupascu @livingdevops no single entity "runs" unix. the trademark (name) and specification is open group. the original research unix is own by some other open entity thing. and then there's aix, hp-ux, solaris, free bsd. its a big mess

No disrespect to Linus Torvalds, But Ken Thompson might be the biggest geek who ever lived. 🫡 And almost nobody knows his name. At 28, he created Unix. > The OS that inspired every modern operating system on the planet. At 66, the age when most engineers retire, he co-created Go. > A language millions of developers love, and used to build most of modern Devops tools like Kubernetes, Terraform, Prometheus, Grafana, etc. But that is still not the full story. - Dennis Ritchie built on Thompson’s B to create C. - Linus built Linux inspired by Thompson’s Unix. - He co-invented UTF-8, the encoding behind every website you visit. - He built grep, a tool developers still use daily in 2024. The internet you are scrolling right now exists because of him. And he did everything without Claude, cursor, ChatGPT. Ken Thompson. Remember the name.

@KattyTheEnby @sauravk87 no. im saying structs are just a block of memory, the in memory layout itself is still different in that case, i.e. a memcmp would fail due to positioning alone not just padding (unless you get lucky with the right data type permuations)

@sinistan @sauravk87 [2/2] > not the same in memory regardless of arch or alignment for the reason you cited Like "For the reason you citedm they are not…"? Or are you saying the reason I am citing is wrong? Even if there is more to the explanation, what I said is still correct.

@KattyTheEnby @sauravk87 that depends on the arch. e.g. if the target was 8 bit. even on i386 32 bit everything revolves around 4 byte alignment. but they are still technically not the same in memory regardless of arch or alignment for the reason you cited

@sauravk87 [2/2] … This is because, unlike contemporary languages, like Rust or Zig, the memory layout ov a struct in C matches its source-code declaration. (I.e. the compiler does not reorder struct fields to maximize memory usage.)

@i3Cheese @Adriksh It depends on what you are talking about. The C pointer i.e. as a first class language feature, pointer arithmetic, the syntax, concept of an lvalue and rvalue that was thompson and ritchie. The underlying concept in pure ML or assembly already existed as vectors or indirection

@Adriksh C pointers weren't invented. C was designed as human readable assembly. And in assembly pointers is the only way to work this something other then few numbers

C pointers were invented because a systems engineer decided that instead of just passing the data, it would be much funnier to hand a junior dev the exact geographic coordinates of a landmine in ram.

No disrespect to Linus Torvalds, but this guy is the greatest geek alive 🫡 Created UNIX in 1971 when he was 28 years old. Created Go in 2009 when he was 66 years old😲 He also developed the B programming language (which led to C), created UTF-8 encoding (making international text possible online), and designed essential tools like grep that developers still rely on daily. He also helped with the development of Multics (that led to UNIX), Plan 9 from Bell Labs and Inferno operating systems. That's 4 operating systems in total... Most people don't even use these many OS. Pretty impressive resume, right? 🔥 And it's a shame that many people, even the ones in the IT and tech industry, don't know him. Ken Thompson.... Remember the name 🙏

@FreeSpeechMonk @davepl1968 he's not a boomer just in the windows camp. which is okay if you're a DEC fan but only marginally. tbh plenty of boomers are tech savy and worked on unix and later the gnu effort and toolchain that enabled linux in the first place

@imo_omar @Typo_master_ @chaosprimeZ No that's still a console that just got jail broken. PC hardware is usually by definition open by default not jailed off like a PS5 or Xbox (basically impossible to jail break), even if its harder to expand like a laptop

@sinistan @ArinzeCliffordd @GTAVI_Countdown Well yeah of course not for high end pc gamers. That's gonna cost you some money. Im just referring to the entry lvl pc folks who don't really know how to build one and can just buy it prebuilt. One that have xbox and want to keep their library that's all

PlayStation 6 vs Xbox Helix: - Both aim to make 4k120fps gaming the standard with similar performance to RTX 5080 - Xbox features a much larger APU (408mm2) than PS6 (280mm2) because they aim to produce a PC-console hybrid capable of 240Hz gaming to compete with high-end PCs - PS6 will be more efficient and its main focus is ray-tracing - Xbox Helix is backwards compatible with all games while PS6 is only backwards compatible with PS4 and PS5 games - Xbox Helix price: $1,000 - $1,200 - PS6 price: $550 - $650 - Both targeting a late 2027 launch (via MLID)

@CodyAlanAllred @zacbowden This is equivalent to saying Rog Xbox Ally X isn't a PC, because it ships with the same Xbox Mode that is now being released for Windows 11 overall. If anything this just further cements Helix is running on Windows 11 via Xbox Mode, added on that they're adding 360 games to PC

It's moving Windows game development and Xbox game development onto the same path, making it easy to build once and deploy across PC and Xbox. windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

@NickTThrasher @ArinzeCliffordd @GTAVI_Countdown valid argument but its not going to be competitive with high end gaming pc's it can't be on the pc side the only way they can do this and keep the xbox jailed off is adding another vm for dedicated windows 11 which instantly hits perf. around 10% compared to a native gaming pc

@ArinzeCliffordd @GTAVI_Countdown But they would, that's why its a "hybrid" its a pc with an xbox interface. You can download steam, battlenet, etc. So your statement is void. Most ppl don't know how to build a PC so its easier for them to pay that price for something pre built and has similar capabilities.

@thereal80341675 @d3ucemaximus @Xbox that's not going to target console gamers then. do you have any idea what a real hedt costs even? i ts well over $1k and a series x at $600-$700 was already turning off many console gamers. and even if you could get it in around $1k real pc gamers won't go for it why would they

@d3ucemaximus @Xbox Hmm I don’t know if you heard the rumors around a year ago, but the new Xbox is not just a console, it’s a ultra high end gaming pc, for a affordable price. So I’m very interested if it’s true, and it came from a really reliable source.

@JesseOyims @r0ktech yes except that is not Ritchie. although you do need to credit Kernighan for K&R C which was still the OG minimalist way of principles first engineering And missing is OG Thompson who created B as part of research UNIX along with Ritchie, all of which bootstrapped C
