@LHSyd Ouch! I had 25% last year and am expecting something similar again this year. Time to move.

@HoytsAustralia your website is still broken. In June I sent you an email alerting you to the fact that neither myself or a friend could log in to purchase tickets. Just tried again, 3 months later and I still cant login. Off to Event's functional website I go (again).

It's been a hectic year so far. Went back to freelance and decided to push directing more while starting my own company. Currently sitting in Melbourne jetlagged AF but super lucky to be running around the world making a doc, I love meeting new people and telling stories SO MUCH!

@DrKGregorevic Yes and I only just found out that the building industry goes one step further and has portable long service leave. This would be great for other industries such as the arts where a lot of us are on contract for much shorter periods of time.

I only recently learnt that long service leave, where you get a prolonged period of leave after years of work is uniquely Australian and a throwback to when Australia was ab English colony and people periodically wanted to sail home for a long visit. It’s a pretty great perk!

@hansmast @girdley @Patticus Yes, the larger the source gets in respect to the subject, the softer the light becomes. So even if it’s a small light, as you bring it closer to you/ the subject, it becomes larger and therefore softer. But too close could mean not getting the optimum angle on the subject.

It’s been a while since my photography brain has dug into it, but I believe for a big, soft light source (like a soft box or umbrella), the closer it is, the softer the light. For a hard light source, being further away so it can bounce off walls and ceilings and to lessen strength is generally good (unless it’s just a rim light or something like that). Great guide, thanks!

I built my ideal "look great on Zoom/podcasts" setup. It costs some money -- but it’s worth it. Here is how I did it (if you want to copy it):

@spencerhouck I shot a whole bunch of low budget commercials on one of those cameras. Pretty impressive at the time.

Is it weird I still have a strong residual desire to own a DVX-100a from my college days? (It was the holy grail of digital 24p)

Fun Fact. A few of the shots in this trailer were "photographed" by me and most the rest by my brother. I was the environment artist lead and we had 6 or so artists in my group. We modelled each of the 30 MLB stadiums for 5 different game consoles. youtu.be/-t6w4ujdINs

@kymmidd Except now it’s (slightly) more normalised to wear a mask on public transport if you want to.

Seems there’s a lot of sick people on public transport pushing through to get to work in the office again, just like in the pre-COVID olden days. 😷

@FrontlineFire @chrismcquarrie also speaks to the importance of taking the time to shoot good inserts. Heard it on a podcast somewhere… I don’t remember where now.

Ridley and Tony Scott's use and importance of well photographed inserts in their features likely has to do with their time doing product shots for ads.

when I finally decide to execute an idea I came up with 3 months ago but i had to let it stew and simmer in my subconscious in order for it to occupy every free thought I had until this arbitrary time came that felt right to act upon it

Bill Butler's first Cinematographer job was when he was 41. At 54 years old he photographed Jaws. At 76 years old he shot Anaconda. He worked for more than a decade after that. What a career, and what an inspiration for anyone wanting to get into film.

@kymmidd This is shit. I’ve done work for agencies that have vaporised and then reappeared debt free, still owing lots of people money. They suck.

An important investigation into a seemingly unscrupulous fashion label, an unethical business practice and that unquestioned marketing line, “an Australian success story”.
Bri Lee@bri_lee_writer

Hello, a short thread about the investigation I have out in @THEMONTHLY which is online now and in print Monday. On its surface this is a "fashion" story. It's about the famous and successful label, Ellery, closing in 2019. But what's it's really about is class in Australia.

@TheDrewEnglish @restlesspix I’ve found on a number of occasions that when the look is only embedded in metadata, the editor will still sometimes ignore it and keep it log. Other times they will tell me they’ve been using it but it looks ‘weird’ and after some digging usually turns out they’re double LUTing.

@restlesspix @themattgorrie +1 for cams that embed a look in metadata. MUCH easier to manage. A close second is display proxies. Anything else is just begging for pipeline issues.
