Excellent piece by @StevenErlanger . Ireland needs to start thinking much more seriously about the future of European defence in what may become radically new transatlantic circumstances.
Camille Grand@camille_grand

As always @StevenErlanger captures perfectly the evolving mood in Europe after the latest NATO comments of the US President (and thanks for quoting my @ecfr study which has not aged too badly). nytimes.com/2026/04/02/wor… nytimes.com/2026/04/02/wor…

@alexstubb @drpezeshkian Any Gulf States targeted by Iran house US military installations. Why would they open the Straits, its their strongest weapon against attack. Perhaps phoning Washington or Tel Aviv would have been better.

I had a call with President of Iran, @drpezeshkian. We discussed the situation in Iran and the Middle East. A ceasefire and a diplomatic solution are urgently needed. I emphasized the need to end the strikes on neighbouring countries and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait Hormuz. Despite the disagreements, it is important to maintain dialogue.

The vast majority of Irish people support Ukraine 100% and are glad to see the government expressing that support in diplomacy and humanitarian aid. Europe is accruing a debt to heroic Ukrainians who are defending us with their lives which can never be repaid.
Helen McEntee TD@HMcEntee

Proud to convey to President Zelenskyy Ireland’s steadfast solidarity with Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. During our Presidency of the EU, we will work to ensure Ukraine receives the support it needs and achieves progress on Ukraine’s EU accession path.

Because approximately 70% of teachers being trained for the profession in NI are from a CNR background. That's alarming. It doesn't matter. It should be meritocratic. But the precedent was set on this in other public sector jobs. PUL is underrepresented in teaching. Simple.

Our neutrality is important to us. It is a policy we have adhered to for decades, but it is irrelevant to other countries. It neither enhances nor degrades us in the eyes of others. What does drag us down is the perception that we are freeloaders when it comes to defence & security, benefiting from the efforts of others but unwilling to pull our weight.

The British identity of Northern unionists must be respected and protected in a new Ireland… I’m going to return this month to the theme of my last blog on Northern Ireland’s continued existence in a new or united Ireland, as outlined by SDLP leader Cl sluggerotoole.com/2026/04/02/the…

As our Jewish community celebrates Passover, it continues to be subject to daily attack. During recent @BritishIrishPA an Irish official told me vehemently that 🇮🇪 wasn’t antisemitic. Asserting that without talking to 🇮🇪 Jews is text book example of antisemitism @NIFriendsIsrael

Irish nationalists in 2018: "We just want to help promote the Irish language in a sensitive and appropriate way" Irish nationalists in 2026 "Irish language signs on every street in the Shankill and Sandy Row"
Ash Stronge@ashstronge

Honestly, there should be a blanket policy of dual language signs on all streets in Belfast. This patchwork of signage is only going to lead to more problems over the long terms. Dual language signs hurt no-one.
