Universities- both Queens and Ulster- now being used by the aggressive Irish language lobby to force their divisive agenda with signage. This is all about ‘greening’ all institutions, with now a focus on an aggressive march through Universities.

@squinteratn You seem to have a complex associated with my role as an educator. Did you not enjoy your school days? Does my job trigger you in some way? Or is it my PhD? You're trying so hard to demean me, it's embarrassing now. You seem intelligent; but it's wasted, frankly.

@DrWHKitchen I am Bogartian in the shame my behaviour causes me. One thing, though. You seem to think you're due deference on here. But Twitter's not a classroom. It's a political/social bouncy castle and you're boinging like the rest of us. If you want 'Yes, sir' you're in the wrong place.

There are currently 205 enrollments in Irish Language courses in total at QUB. By contrast, approx. 1700 of 3500 international students at QUB are Chinese. What is the purpose of a sign? Are the 205 students currently wandering around, lost, unable to find their classes?
Matthew Shanks@matthew_shanks1

Very, very true. I have been speaking out on this issue at Queen’s because I feel passionately that students from a PUL background should not be subjected to such marginalisation. I will continue to lead these efforts in the coming days to maximise the ‘no’ vote.

@squinteratn You're an incredibly arrogant person, and someone who doesn't tend to engage in good faith discussion. I hope you get some enjoyment from it, at least.

@DrWHKitchen I didn't set the agenda, Doc. You're the one who's keen to talk about language. And I can't help it if you need a little help now and then with your own. Think of it as a learning moment.

@GarethBurns18 @BBCNolan @StephenNolan Gareth, you can say what it *seems* to be about. I'm telling you what my concerns are *actually* about. Stop ascribing views and mindsets to me that I don't hold. I answered your question clearly.

@DrWHKitchen A lot of it seems to be about your own fears and it becomes self-perpetuating if you are not a bit smarter and more understanding, both in a local and a UK/GB context. The Nolan Radio show this morning being a case in point. @BBCNolan @StephenNolan

@squinteratn Oh goodness, that's a new low. If the additional 'l' gives you a victory which makes you feel powerful, enjoy it. In fact, I'm glad I made the error to let you have your moment. Absolutely pathetic.

@DrWHKitchen Enrolment in English, enrollment in American English. 1. If you’re on your high horse about language, probably best to mind your language. 2. Should I be worried that I’m explaining this to an educator?

@GarethBurns18 I don't support our devolved assembly in its current form. Government should lead and deliver. The Assembly does neither. Your comparison is a totally fair question, but one which I think reduces politics down to non-contextualised issues. NI and Wales are very different places.

@GarethBurns18 The beauty of devolution is we don't have to, Gareth. Being pro-Union doesn't mean all 4 parts of the UK align in everything. Devolved institutions allow for centralised government, with nuanced differences on local issues. Language is a local issue.

@GarethBurns18 Gareth, people are entitled to disagree. Browbeating people into agreement with you by accusing them of being antiquated or prehistoric isn't an impressive argument. If people engage in IL advocacy in good faith, then they might get a good faith response. It's on them.

@DrWHKitchen Mostly in your own head. Most of us have moved on. Win hearts and minds and show consistency with the rest of the UK. Patience is very very thin with miserable hardline Unionism. ( and I’m from a Unionist background). Don’t be a fossil, please.

"agreed to share the North until we achieve Irish democracy". What might happen then, Paul? Will those who oppose this reunification be kicked out? Always a "struggle". Always the victim. Always anti-Brit.
Paul Murphy@paulmurphy68

@DrWHKitchen I fully endorse the GFA,we all live here, we agreed to share the North until we achieve Irish democracy. You're Britishness has no bearing on my Irishness. Why do unionists feel the need to oppose any expression of Irishness in Ireland? Do you endorse the GFA?

@paulmurphy68 And that's under the terms of GFA, which you continue to rewrite and misrepresent for your own purposes. That's you though, Paul; all fabrication and manipulation of reality. GFA says NI is part of the UK until it isn't. So you aren't in Ireland. Simple.

@latte_elitist Presumably Irish students who speak English? Rendering completely unnecessary the dual signage. The first stat was to demonstrate an indication of possible Irish language speakers at QUB. Signs point towards things. Otherwise, you want to mark territory with Irishness?

@paulmurphy68 True to form, you then level accusations of fear and bigotry at me. It might shock you to find that some people are proud to be British, and if YOU have an issue with that, then it's YOU who is the bigot. Celebrate your Irishness as you see fit; I'm not obliged to agree.

@DrWHKitchen As I see it? It's a fact that the British tried to eradicate Irish people, language and culture. Reclaiming one's Irish heritage isn't rebellion, it's a right of the Irish people. Why are you politicising advocacy for our beautiful heritage? Fear? Bigotry? Imperial arrogance?

@paulmurphy68 Yes, Paul. History on this Island is contested. Facts are notoriously tricky to pin down. I know you struggle with that. But that's reality. It seems your advocacy for all-things-Irish is as much to do with your anti-Brit leanings than anything else. You're struggling to deflect.

@paulmurphy68 So your advocacy is to counteract the British attempts at eradication, as you see it? It's a rebellion, of sorts? Ok, well then that would mean the advocacy is, in part, anti-Brit. And that's absolutely fine. But that *might* just put some people off.

@DrWHKitchen My family name is Ó Murchú, ( pronounced O Murahoo) I'm from Ardoyne, Eoin's (O'Neill) Height, Béal Feirste, Belfast Reclaiming what was deliberately targeted for eradication is a pleasure. How's discovering your history disproportionate or overplayed. Should we ignore history?

@GarethBurns18 Ok, now the question is clear. The unfortunate difference is the politicisation of Irish compared to Welsh. I have no issues with Irish Language advocacy in a fair and proportionate manner. It matters greatly to some people. I simply want it to be proportionate.

@paulmurphy68 I'm outlining how overplayed and disproportionate the Irish Language discussion is. That seems to be motivated by something other than the language. And I find that dishonest. Mocking is a childish response. I've come to expect that from you, though. It's unimpressive.

@DrWHKitchen You're using false equivalence regarding the Irish and Chinese languages. You try to minimise and downgrade the extent of a living language that's currently undergoing a great revival, why's that? It's totally absurd, you'll be mocked accordingly...
