They have been responding to feedback. They replaced plant based saturated fat (coconut?) with monounsaturated. Have added more variety of plant protein sources, like fava; now more protein per serving than beef.

They are also moving my beans burgers and "beyond steak" around the store. And often these products go out of stock, so it seems like there is a quite market for them.

I don’t remember all details. But I think if you shopped online using a specific vendor, a sidebar would display an eco rating for products you were browsing.

If you point a phone camera to a QR you go to vendor site URL that can brag about virtues. Or a purpose built eco phone app could map vendor URL onto unbiased critical info on eco-friendliness.

@TyBealPhD @theproof @GardnerPhD @YouTube Re whole grains in schools. At school near me middle schoolers take turns milling wheat berries with hand crank Victorio mill; & love eating resulting bread. Gets kids excited. Could schools put out bid for local baker to deliver whole grain sourdough pizza? Drive change locally.

@GetBrewLedger @fleroy1974 In this study, the fungal fermentation was tested on 30 food system plant wastes. Looks like there was minimal success on spent grains, so it’s not applicable for brewery waste. But looks promising for up cycling other process waste. nature.com/articles/s4156…

@zerothworld @fleroy1974 Breweries already send spent grain to farms, but converting it into a direct protein source is a brilliant next step. Wonder how the mycological process adapts to barley's different fiber profile compared to soy or peanut pulp.

"Alternative protein" is the future nobody asked for. Except VCs funding it, those trying to sell it, & a tiny minority of ideologues preaching it. Vegetarians already have much better, & the rest of us aren't interested in overpriced meat cosplay, bioreactor glop & insect paste.

@violin4all @EBourgeois @rexdelay @SteB777 Recent research on human gut microbiome has found that, post damage via antibiotics, rapid restoration is driven by eating diverse plant/fungi prebiotics. I wonder if applying compost brewed from diverse plant sources could help the soil recovery from pesticide damage.

@violin4all @EBourgeois @rexdelay Amazing study! I’m wondering whether follow-up research, especially in the crop land sites, could investigate ability of different specific plants or combos to repair the degraded soil microbiome health. Or applying char or activated char. @SteB777

@LoriShemek My understanding is that people generally can balance longer on dominant leg. I do left leg for as long as possible; then do right leg for exactly same duration. Maybe keep my balance in balance?

Did You Know? A 2023 study found that adults who couldn't hold a 10-second single-leg stand had nearly double the mortality risk over the following 7 years. Other research shows that people unable to complete this 10-second, unsupported balance test are nearly twice as likely to die within the next decade. Poor balance is a major risk factor for falls and indicates frailty. Balance is a neurological skill. If you don't train it, you lose it. And the fall risk it protects against is crucial particularly as one gets older. The good news is that it can be trained and the ability to balance returns very quickly.

@BiggestComeback Have walked ~ 8k steps/day for years. I’ve been logging & plotting my daily weight for past 1000 days. Graph clearly shows I broke through loss plateau when switching from counting steps to doing 30 minutes Japanese IWT daily. A year later same thing by going to 1 hour daily IWT.

Over the last several years I’ve run a pretty extensive N=1 experiment on walking. I’ve averaged: • <5k steps/day for months • 7–8k for months • 10k+ for 6+ months • back down <5k/day for months And I’m now pushing toward 11k/day in 2026 (4 million steps). My conclusion: Higher step counts dramatically improve energy and sleep. Not a little. Noticeably. Here’s an interesting note: High levels of walking does NOT reliably lower my body fat levels. If my diet slips, my fat storage goes up… even at high step counts. Which means 2 things can be true at once: • Walking is foundational for health • Diet still drives body fat levels But if you forced me to pick one habit most people should add tomorrow? Walking wins. Low injury risk. Zero skill required. No equipment. The only real cost is time. And there are ways to mitigate that. And after years of testing… and after working with hundreds of patients as a health coach… I’m convinced most people are under-walking by thousands of steps per day.

@SteB777 I’m intrigued with potential for machine learning neural nets to capture, in silico, a model of complex system. Eg plant a field with HCP grid of crop patches; each patch surrounded by 6 random different companions. Train ML net with every 7-companion set/outcome yield pair.

Western Civilization, it's academia, is founded on massive hubris and arrogance, where it's run by people who pretend to know far more than they do. When I've tried to discuss, the fundamental errors than Aristotle and Plato made, with philosophers, they make excuses for them. 10/

I want to explain, why hardly anyone understands what biodiversity is. 1) The number of species on Earth, is completely unknown. Their ecological interactions, even more unknown. 2) There is no satisfactory definition of what a species is. 1/🧵

@drterrysimpson Useful habit: Log weight daily in app or spreadsheet that plots 10 day moving avg & line for maintenance wt or gradual loss rate, eg -3.65 kg/yr. Do whatever works for you to stay on track, eg eat a bit lighter if you’re above target line. + eat healthy foods.

The idea that obesity is solved by discipline is comforting. It means we don’t have to understand physiology. It also happens to be wrong. When the model fails, science replaces it. The lizard did more for obesity than 60,000 diet books. (if you know, you know)

@NutritionMadeS3 Excellent! I’ve been following most of these approaches. I also started doing 24 hour soak of whole grains before boiling; supposedly activates phytase enzyme to neutralize phytic acid for more nutrient bioavailability. Is this correct, & any relevance to insulin sensitivity?

@TyBealPhD There are many under exploited ways to get more nutrition from given food sources. Eg crushing chicken bones when making broth to maximize marrow use. Or soaking egg shells in vinegar to create calcium acetate; bitter, but tastes ok if mixed with sweet & sour foods.
