Dreams of Code
Dreams of Code@dreamsofcode_io·
I’ve been getting back into coding by hand, specifically challenging myself to doing low level Rust, whilst streaming on Twitch. Skill atrophy is absolutely a thing. Kinda embarrassing how difficult the first day was. Second day was a lot better, but it honestly scares me about setting myself up for a future dependency by outsourcing these skills to coding agents. Maybe it won’t matter, but something inside me screams danger about the idea of paying a subscription fee just to be able to write code.

@dreamsofcode_io Is the skill atrophy a thing or did we just used to time spent with agents doing 90% done kinda right in a couple of minutes vs. couple of hours getting 40% done by hand?

My first job was as a shoulder cutter at a poultry processing factory. At a point I knew every job on the line and could debone an entire chicken in under ten seconds. There is no way at all I could do that now, but that's okay because I don't cut chicken for a living anymore.

@dreamsofcode_io I’ve been doing the same thing for a week now, and I barely had any muscle memory in the beginning. I’m getting tired of the model regression that we’ve seen for the past ~6 months, where I’m forcing myself to do everything by hand now.

yessss I've felt that too either from time away or asking AI too early on. Learning to find what you're looking for in the docs and knowing the resources at your disposal are so important. So much of the time AI suggests something that's mostly right, but is missing pieces. Often I find it's faster to go straight to the docs if you know where to look

@dreamsofcode_io skill atrophy is real but it is often index loss not capability loss. a few reps usually bring it back fast.

@dreamsofcode_io Now try coding in assembly after using these high level languages for so long. Don't even try writing binary code after your skills wither away using compilers!

@dreamsofcode_io why not "middle of the road" just pick a higher easier language to write it? like typescript or python? so its not either extreme of vibe coding or low level rust.

@dreamsofcode_io I'm also doing some trad coding lately. I'm also doing rust, just not as low level. I'm just a fledgling rustling atm.
