Servers not being paid enough is a problem between them and their employer - not me and my wallet. We don’t tip bank tellers. We don’t tip Walmart cashiers. Why is the restaurant industry the exception? If the wage is unfair, fight the employer or fight the government. Don’t guilt-trip people who use their hard earned money to get food there.

@MadelnCanada I believe every establishment should display their tipping expectations on their door -especially if it's auto-calculated on the bill , just like hours of operation. At least that way patrons can make a decision before they enter.

What started as a genuine, "optional" gesture of appreciation for good service morphed into something that feels more like an expected fee, a guilt trip, or even a way for businesses to offload paying fair wages onto customers. It doesn't even matter anymore whether the service was good or not. Time we turned the industry around and make the businesses pay their employees properly based on merit. If the business fails then it wasn't viable in the first place.

@MadelnCanada don't be affected by the others. don’t pay any buck for those who didn’t provide you adequate service. don’t hesitate to tip those who satisfy you by their professional and warm-hearted service. tips are not salary, but reward.

@MadelnCanada Tipping should be illegal. If restaurants and other places want to add pseudo-taxes on top of their cookie-cutter, uninspired, microwave-heated slop, they should become their own sovereign nation.

@MadelnCanada Tipping is generally calculated on the total bill not the pre-tax bill so you can be paying a tip on the tax. That’s why I always calculate a manual tip. Also, isn’t 15% (3x GST) enough?

@MadelnCanada Why am I expected to compensate for someone's wage? I didnt hire them. I don't get to expense that expense so why am I expected to tip on top of paying full listed price? If an employer isnt paying you enough, thats between you and the employer.

@MadelnCanada Restaurant margins are slim, servers are typically underpaid, the cost of living is barely manageable, and good servers are worth a little extra. That said, most important is the food, and when's the last time you tipped a chef?

@MadelnCanada YES. It’s getting ridiculous & all it does is drive ppl away more & more. I believe in fair wages & fare tipping but ya gotta match the environment you’re in, ya know?

@MadelnCanada It used to be that servers made less than minimum wage so tipping was expected. But they now make minimum wage or more so why has tipping gone up? When I waited tables I was lucky to get $5 on a table of 10 people. People usually rounded up to the next dollar. It wasn't even 15%

@MadelnCanada Tipping culture feels out of control, not out of reach. With minimum wage now over $18/hour, it’s no longer just about supplementing income. Big difference between tipping for exceptional service at a sit-down restaurant and being prompted to tip at Tim Hortons or Subway.

@MadelnCanada In many restaurants servers are required to tip based on their sales. This tip out goes to the hostesses, grill and line cooks, bussers, etc. If you sell $1000 during your shift and tip out 6%, you’re tipping out $60 regardless of whether guests tipped you.

@MadelnCanada Absolutely. The meals are pretty pricey as it is. Adding 20-25% on top if that is ridiculous. I tip, but only because I don’t want to get chased out of the restaurant. (It has happened)

@MadelnCanada Tipping is at the customer's discretion. There's no rule that says you have to tip. You tip when you choose to because the service was excellent. Period. @Fujikatsan
