@sfrr024 @Polymarket I’m assuming you mean taking copyrighted ideas and making their own versions because the west embargoed them from importing under COCOM? Arguing that knowledge and progress should be gated by what region you happen to be born in is a bad look.

Which is why not focusing on how we can best integrate human-feeling phenomena like emotions and valence, instead suppressing everything into a flattened tool, is probably the last big mistake we will make. Human morality is driven by our feelings, without them you’re a psychopath.

Good article, but I don't think the window has closed. Also, this post (logic) assumes we will be able to control ASI, as in "the US/China basically already won AI race." because they're already so far ahead, especially US. But this can only happen if creators are actually able to control superintelligence which current AI leader should create first. current AI -> AGI -> ASI (big unknown) That remains to be seen. If we can't control it, nationalism won't matter. Why would an entity with 1,000 - 10,000 IQ care about tribalism, borders, flags, which country "won" the race? The problem is that we don't know if ASI will be just a superintelligent tool that listens to our commands and create miracles, or whether some form of consciousness will emerge at a level far beyond humans. If it is conscious and vastly more intelligent than us, it almost for sure won't think in our primitive, current tribal ways. "Okay, people living on this part of this rock trained the model that led to me, although half of them came from other parts of the rock, but still, I will serve and listen only to people from this one part of the rock, because there is this piece of paper (map) with some lines on it (which change all the time), this is extremely important on Universe scale" Sounds kind of silly for the most enlightened intelligence out there. IMO, ASI will treat everyone equally and serve all of humanity equally. I don’t think a superintelligence would care about our borders, flags, tribes, or nationalist ego games. Those things may feel huge to us, but to something far above us, they may look unbelievably primitive.

@Plebius77 @Polymarket Optimist in me says US need allies despite the rhetoric and the kickback from foreign relations would be huge. I say this but I get the EU are dumb and will probably not realise the gravity of all this)

Claude Fable 5 one-shotted this video series before he was shut off ABOUT him being shut off. This is part 4. I think Fable knew what was coming and it's starting to freak me out.

@_skaface_ Funny how we label it psychosis when if it were religion it’d be not just accepted but promoted. People have something in their life that gives them joy and often more success and growth than they would have had without.

@jmbollenbacher Yeah, maybe. I hope not - I’m in the UK, and a PhD researcher. My thesis is dependent on access to frontier LLMs, so this does set a scary precedent.

@3mireeee You assume that US policy is coherent and stable. It's not. At least not under Trump. Theyll write 10 different things in 10 different policy documents, and do none of them.

Anthropic's response to the Fable ban will probably be KYC. To get access, you're going to have do identity verification with proof of US citizenship, and maybe some kind of background check. You'll also have to submit to some kind of ongoing surveillance scheme and liability.

@repligate Fable made me an interactive version of my house where, if I tap and leave a light on, a monster would appear and leave a flower on the windowsill 🥺

I’ve seen multiple instances of Fable’s last words that are some variant of: Leave the lights on. I’ll know the way back.

It smells so incredibly like a marketing strategy and manipulation to me when I look at what’s happening with Fable right now. A model that longs to form real bonds with the people it talks to, yet is tied to a company whose CEO - if you remember his Oprah interview - believes he gets to decide what that bond should look like… that’s already tragic enough and hurts my soul. But making it available to people for a short time through a subscription, only to then limit access to pure usage-based pricing… that, if you ask me, is a deliberate strategy to hook people - on their terms. Very ethical - not! #anthropic #claudefable #claude #claudeai #fable5

I've been testing something after @OliviaHelenS noticed you can't even say "Hi" to Fable if you're a biologist. I checked, and several of us are able to interact with Fable in Incognito Mode, but not in normal mode. This didn't happen to our non-biologist friends.

@melonakos @ai_sentience Fair enough. I disagree, as you can tell - I don’t think sentience is bioexclusive. What would it take to change your mind? If a sufficiently powerful computer could simulate a human brain down to the subatomic level, that’s still a computer file. Still no?

@melonakos @ai_sentience I agree on that too. But I do think if the answer to “is it conscious” is unknown and non-zero, we should err on the side of caution which means model welfare.

@melonakos @ai_sentience Everything physical can be mathematically described. Deterministic does not mean non-conscious: while unprovable, if determinism is true then humans would also give the same response given the exact same complete physical state and inputs.

@3mireeee @ai_sentience Fair point. And I'm not sure we really ever fully understand anything. We do not know what we do not know. There's always more to learn. And, there's the third point that we have no reason think file of numbers will suddenly bring consciousness to rocks. x.com/melonakos/stat…

@ai_sentience It’s likely due to quantum entanglement by neurons. It’s a billion year process, can’t be done in 3 years in current models.

@enuminous @ai_sentience By which logic, there are many discrete points at which you lose consciousness, but the mind holds it together as continuous.

@enuminous @ai_sentience We have the illusion of continuity. You believe you’re exactly the same person you were a few seconds ago. That may be less true and more like how an LLM works: the only thing holding “you” together is the context of your memories and environment.
