On this day in 1947, Barnsley played #LeicesterCity at Oakwell in Division 2. Before kick-off the crowd sang ‘Abide with me’ in tribute to director and former manager (including when the Reds won the FA Cup in 1912) Arthur Fairclough, who passed away 3 days earlier. A 2nd half goal from winger Johnny Kelly earned the Reds a 1-0 win. Stanley Charlesworth, signed from Grimsby in December, made the last of his 7 appearances for the Reds before moving to Gainsborough Trinity. #BarnsleyFC

On this day in 1924, for the second week running Barnsley played Nelson FC, promoted from Division 3N the previous season as Champions. The game at Oakwell the previous weekend was a 0-0 draw but despite the Reds leading 3-1, Nelson came back to win 4-3 this time. Barnsley scorers were Frank Matthews, Ernie Hine and Joe Halliwell. At the end of the season Nelson finished 2nd bottom of Division 2 and were relegated. A few years later in 1931 they lost their League status altogether and the club folded in 1936. It was reformed in 1946 and now competes in the NW Counties League. Barnsley’s record against Nelson therefore remains played 2, lost 1 and drawn 1. #BarnsleyFC #NelsonFC

In a Sunday game live on TV on this day in 1993, Barnsley played Sunderland at Oakwell in Division 1. The Sunday Sun had an assessment of the Reds' players - 😂 at some of the comments. They got Wayne Biggins right tho' - he scored twice, the first a stunning free kick, to earn the Reds a 2-0 win. This was his 5th brace of the season btw. Ian Hendon, signed on a month’s loan from Spurs played the first of his six games for the Reds. #BarnsleyFC #SunderlandAFC youtube.com/watch?v=M43F3b…

Barnsley played at Stoke City in Div 2 on this day in 1926 & were winless in 14 away games that season. Stoke were on a 5 match losing streak themselves and Joseph Richmond scored to put the Reds in front after 17 minutes. Frank Allen, playing his 3rd game since signing from Castleford Town, scored his first goal to make it 2-0 at h-t and whilst Stoke got one back later, Barnsley won 2-1. Allen scored again in his 5th game and despite playing 63 more games, his 2nd was his last goal for the club. #BarnsleyFC #StokeCity #FrankAllen

On this day in 2009, after Dennis Souza had refused to be a sub for the previous game V Crystal Palace, manager Simon Davey told BBC Radio Sheffield he’d talked with the Brazilian and he’d return to the squad to face Derby the following weekend. Davey said: "Dennis wasn't picked and chose not to be on the bench. It's disappointing. You want all the players to be fighting in your corner but it was dealt with on the day and is finished with." #BarnsleyFC #DennisSouza

On this day in 1914, John Hastie resigned as Secretary Manager of Barnsley FC. The cause of the resignation was said to be a matter “entirely between Mr Hastie and the directors of the club”. He managed the team for 74 games between 1912 and 1914 and Barnsley won 34 of those matches and lost 24. His win percentage of 45.95% places him in the top 6 Barnsley managers.  Hastie died just three years later from pneumonia. #BarnsleyFC #JohnHastie

On this day in 2000, ex-Red Clint Marcelle, released by Barnsley, complained in the press about immigration officials refusal to grant a work permit. Marcelle had been training with WBA for 3 weeks but the decision resulted in the collapse of his move. Marcelle was refused a permit because of his lack of recent international action for Trinidad and Tobago. #BarnsleyFC #WBA #ClintMarcelle

On this day in 1967, Barnsley played #NottsCounty at Oakwell in Division 4. An unremarkable game ended 0-0. It is noteworthy though as local boys, Keith Cockburn and Brian Hemstock both made their only appearance for the Reds. Barry Murphy also returned to the starting line-up for the first time since September and played in all of the remaining 11 games in the '66/67 season. He was then ever present for the next 3 seasons. #BarnsleyFC

On this day in 1951, in a last minute transfer deadline day deal, Barnsley signed Derby County's captain and ex-England international Tim Ward. On this day in 1982, Barnsley played Division 2 (now Champ’ship) leaders Luton Town at Oakwell. Brian Stein gave Luton the lead before Colin Walker equalised just before half-time and then made it 2-1 in the 2nd half. Luton levelled but Ian Banks fired home from the edge of the box to make it 3-2 and an Ian Evans header extended the lead. Luton got a 3rd after a Nicky Law OG and the final score was 4-3. #BarnsleyFC #LutonTown youtube.com/watch?v=RDkj5h…

On this day in 1902, strangely named General Williams Stevenson* played his last game for Barnsley in a 3-2 win at Stockport County in Division 2. He'd signed for the Reds in June 1900 from Liverpool for a fee of £30 & was then a regular in the team for the next two seasons and on Easter Saturday 1901 even played in goal in a 3-1 loss at Burslem Port Vale when the regular ‘keeper was injured. In total he played 62 games for Barnsley before moving to Wellingborough during the summer. *His parents strange choice of names also included his brother – Admiral. #BarnsleyFC

On this day in 1953, bottom of Division 2 and heading towards relegation, Barnsley were thrashed 6-0 at Luton Town. Along with a defeat by the same score at Huddersfield in September, this was the biggest defeat of the season. It was also the final appearance for Jasper Yeuell, signed from Portsmouth the previous summer. He made 20 league and cup appearances and was given a free transfer at the end of the season, later signing for Southern League Weymouth. #BarnsleyFC #LutonTown #JasperYeuell

On this day in 1991, Barnsley played Everton at Oakwell in the Northern Semi-Final of the Full Members Cup (Zenith Data Systems Cup, previously the Simod Cup), held between 1985 and 1992 and created to fill the void after English clubs were banned from Europe following the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985. It was open to clubs in the top two divisions of the Football League—those with full voting rights, or ‘Full Members’. A goal by Tony Cottee on the stroke of half-time knocked the Reds out, ending Barnsley’s best run in the competition. Everton reached the national final but lost to Crystal Palace. Clive Baker played in goal, as he did in every game in the 90/91 season. #BarnsleyFC #Everton #CliveBaker
