“I’m not saying my wife’s a bad cook but she uses a smoke alarm as a timer.”
Unbelievably it was that kind of gag by Bob Monkhouse that led to an episode of BBC’s The Repair Shop being pulled after a TV production employee took offence to an alleged “ sexist” joke.
The hardback archives of Monkhouse’s handwritten joke books, dating back to 1960s, were bought in for repair by the comic’s adopted daughter and his old writing partner.
In a tribute to the comic, who died in 2003, footage of the restoration was due to be aired this year.
But the BBC axed the segment after a member of the production company Ricochet complained about one of the gags.
I would like to know the identity of that employee. He or she has robbed many of us of a decent bit of television. Rare enough on the BBC
I couldn’t give a toss if they were upset about the gag. Monkhouse will have bought a damned sight more pleasures to the world than this employee ever will.
@ChrisGPackham@Helen_Whately You can only speak for yourself, you cannot demand others relinquish what remains of their disposable income because of what you believe.
On BBC Question Time,
@Helen_Whately just said ‘we can’t afford Net Zero’ . She is a human health hazard and grossly misinformed or lying . Time to call out the lunatics leading us to hell . No facts , no truth , no integrity - no hope.
Hands up if you’ve had your council tax bill for the next year and it’s going up! 🙌🏼
Mine wasn’t frozen, it’s gone up.
Labour lied to get into power.
“Labour would freeze your council tax”
“Not a penny more on your council tax”
“No ifs, no buts”
Lies, lies, and more lies.
The cost of government borrowing for 30 years has just hit 5.6%, compared to the worst one day spike to 4.8% under Truss. Rachel Reeves said that rate had crashed the economy. Oh dear, what has the Chancellor done?
@BenGrahamUK@ChazSharp It’s because they don’t own the sites. They’re on very expensive, long term contracts with local councils etc. Apparently, usage hasn’t recovered since lockdowns.
NCP has gone into administration.
They’ve been running car parks since 1931, and somehow ended up £305m in debt.
Surely the maintenance for a car park is simple: ticket machines, barriers, lights, and occasional cleaning.
How can a business model literally based on people paying to park go bankrupt?
@BenGrahamUK Several factors involved here, staff costs and council tax, health and safety, cashless economy and maintenance.
Old business's always thing the good times will return on their own, they dont.
