The Alabama gov commuted the death sentence of a man, set to be executed, who was convicted under felony murder doctrine. Bolts reported last year on how Alabama is extraordinarily prone to prosecute people for murder under felony murder. boltsmag.org/alabama-felony…

More than 75K people have already signed the petition urging clemency for #CharlesSonnyBurton, a 75 year old man in a wheelchair who did not kill anyone. He is scheduled to be executed on March 12 in Alabama. Add your name and ask Gov Ivey to show mercy: actionnetwork.org/petitions/gov-…

For proof that this can work, you need look no further than the calls our listeners made to Governor Ivey after our Rocky Myers series, which contributed to her commuting his sentence & taking him off of death row: eji.org/news/alabama-g…

@LegallyDashing It makes sense to me. It's similar to IAC claims in the context of pleas, with the question there being whether counsel's deficient performance (e.g., incorrectly claiming a motion to suppress would fail) led to the client pleading guilty.

@EvidenceProf I'm curious what you think of the section that permits a petition for PCR even if the petitioner pled guilty, as opposed to a jury having convicted the petitioner, with an attendant trial record to scrutinize to determine if PCR is warranted.

@SteveCooperEsq @Undisclosedpod I don't, but Governor Ivey was responsive in the only other Alabama case which we featured on the podcast in which we asked her to act.

Sonny admits being involved in the robbery that led to Derrick DeBruce fatally shooting Doug Battle, but he had left the store before the shooting. DeBruce has had his sentence reduced to life without parole.

Today, we're recording a special @Undisclosedpod with the legal team for Sonny Burton, who faces execution on 3/12 despite 6/8 living jurors & the victim's daughter calling for clemency. Here is how you can act now to save Sonny's life: charlessonnyburton.com/action
