An F-35A/B Lightning ll made an emergency landing at a U.S. air base in the Middle East this week, after it was struck by what is believed to be Iranian surface-to-air fire, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CNN. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a Spokesman for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), said the fifth-generation stealth jet was “flying a combat mission over Iran” when it was forced to make an emergency landing at a base in the Middle East. “The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition,” Hawkins added. “This incident is under investigation.”

If Iran goes ahead with its threats to attack oil and gas facilities in the Gulf, in retaliation for an Israeli strike on its South Pars gas field, to include five facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, it will have a devastating effect on global energy supplies. No one should underestimate the severity of what the fallout will be if Iran follows through with those threats.

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

It’s rational in the context of the alternatives. It’s easy to forget that the alternative to the US hegemony in WW2 was Germanic and Japanese fascism globally. Similarly, it’s easy to forget today that as bad as American capitalism is, Islamist fascism and Chinese totalitarianism are quite a bit worse by any humanitarian metric.
