40 years of Nireekshana One really hard hitting look at an innocent protagonist jailed for no fault of his, hard hitting look at prison life. Remake of Balu Mahendra's Yatra that had Mammoty and Shobana in the lead. The movie revolves around a forest officer Murali Krishna( Bhanuchander) who becomes a prisoner due to circumstances beyond his control. One moment he is leading a peaceful, happy life looking forward to settle down with the woman he loved Tulasi( Archana), the next moment his life is completely in turmoil, his dreams shattered. Balu Mahendra wonderfully balances the sensitive love story with the hard hitting reality of the prison. Two different worlds actually. Some of the prison scenes are quite traumatic. Especially one where an elderly prisoner commits suicide fed up with his life. Bhanuchander was one good actor but often typecast in action roles. Whenever given a really good role like this, he did full justice to it. Archana is equally excellent as Tulasi, combining innocence, pain so well. Satyanarayana as the rather harsh, sadistic Jailor puts in another good performance. And finally maestro Ilayaraja once again delivers an outstanding soundtrack. Emotionally haunting "Chukkale Tochave", the romantic "Aakasam Enatido", "Yamuna Teere" and the children's song "Teeyani Daanima".
