Norway’s sovereign wealth fund has actual wealth, from savings.
PM Carney’s proposed fund is being created entirely from borrowed money.
Markets allocate capital more efficiently than governments. And if nation-building projects are commercially viable, private and pension capital (which Canada has A LOT of) it will fund them. If they’re not viable without government support, a sovereign fund doesn’t change the math on that, it just makes you responsible losses.
Stimulating growth with an hugely indebted economy while refusing to reduce red tape and cut taxes isn’t a thing. They cancel each other out.
