Manufactured homes could save buyers $50K-$100K over site-built homes. But zoning and financing restrictions keep them out of reach in over 800 U.S. counties. A shift in policy could make homeownership more accessible and affordable. pew.org/3AQCml0

The U.S. *can* put housing that's affordable and safe within reach for many Americans. How? Start by looking to this modern take on a centuries-old idea. @gensler_design pew.org/3EpeQx3

When you buy a home with a land contract—where financing comes from the seller, and you only gain legal ownership after the last payment—you might end up with lower up-front costs. But you get fewer consumer protections than with a mortgage. See our brief pewtrusts.org/en/research-an…

“Housing is a very bipartisan issue.” Appreciated @GovTinaKotek’s insights on Oregon’s work to increase housing availability for residents, leveraging data and partnering with communities to consider meaningful policy solutions.

"The cost of housing is up, up, up," Oregon @GovTinaKotek told Pew President @SueUrahn yesterday. In response, Oregon is reforming zoning rules—which has shown to ⬆️ housing availability, slow price growth, and ⬇️ homelessness. A video of the event is coming soon—stay tuned.

These reforms have boosted Minneapolis' housing availability: • Eliminate parking mandates • Encourage apartments in commercial corridors • Establish height minimums near jobs and transit • Permit duplexes, triplexes on *all* lots pew.org/3TOOUR1

A scarcity of homes is raising housing costs, contributing to homelessness in Arizona. Some cities—like Houston and Minneapolis—have found policies that allow for more housing help. Three graphs explain. pew.org/481i6bg #azpol

Do Americans agree with expanding housing options? Many shared that being closer to jobs and schools is a good reason to allow for more. See other reasons for their support 👉 pew.org/47C5HuC

NEW: Data illustrates how housing costs drive homelessness levels. 📈 As rents rise, so does homelessness. Fortunately, in regions like Minneapolis and Houston that added housing and kept rent growth low, homelessness dropped: pew.org/3qyGxNn

With record-high rent burdens and near record-low vacancies, expensive, scarce housing is a huge threat to families and the economy. Policymakers across the US are fighting back, easing zoning laws that make it hard/illegal to build new lower-cost housing. pewtrusts.org/en/research-an…

Many housing assistance programs established during the height of the pandemic allowed homeowners to pause payments—but only for those with federally backed mortgages. This left many homebuyers using alternative financing excluded from relief. pew.org/3ZFn6ha

Why you should care: consumers now can turn to these safe and affordable small loans instead of high-cost payday loans
The Pew Trusts@pewtrusts

📢JUST IN: @WellsFargo now one of four major U.S. banks offering *affordable* alternatives to costly payday loans. Customers can now borrow as much as they would from a payday lender at 15x lower cost with better protections. pew.org/3UVXIBQ

This is great news for consumers who have used payday lenders until now. Borrowing $500 for 4 months from payday lenders costs $500+ in fees alone. @WellsFargo is charging $20.
