I have been thinking a lot about death in the context of Heidegger's Being and Time. How it hems us in and forces us to face the stark reality that we are finite. We can live in avoidance of that reality or we can embrace it and make the best choices we can to lead an authentic life. But...what I have been thinking about specifically today is a bit different. It's facing death from a distance and not when it is immediately upon us. A globalised and consumerist state avoids thinking and talking about death at all costs. Death is the mortal enemy of consumerism with its feel-good vibes, buy this product, that distraction, you're going to live forever so have a "X brand" beer, put your feet up on "X brand" couch and watch the game on "X brand flat screen TV". But our ancestors found a way to make room for the inevitability of death in everyday life. Our Neolithic ancestors most stunningly used their monuments which have lasted millennia as places for the dead and powerful statements of their civilisations. They projected the complexity of their civilisations into the future. It made me think about everyday examples how one deals with the inevitability of death in a manner that shows you lived better because of its inevitability. I thought of my grandmother who had saved her pension for some time before her death - which was sudden, not predicted, meaning she had stored away funds consciously, free of the knowledge death was on its way. She made sure to cover all her burial expenses but also, most importantly to her, she made sure to put aside enough for a dinner at a local hotel for everyone coming to her funeral. She ensured a 'good funeral' for everyone mourning her. The disappearance of religion from the forefront of Irish society has allowed the inevitability of death to be hidden, and with it both meditation on (making peace with the fact) and the ability to be inspired to lead a fulfilling life by it.

‘Why Deny the Obvious Child?’ Today, in the Seanad, I regretted the negative leadership coming from the Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD, the Tánaiste @SimonHarrisTD and the Minister for Health @CarrollJennifer who are supporting Sinn Féin’s @sinnfeinireland move to get rid of the three-day reflection period before abortions. They are doing nothing to try and lower the number of abortions - only supporting a move that will increase the number of lives lost and leave more women with abortion regret. It’s lamentable.

This is devastating news. My thoughts tonight are with the vulnerable people who will hear this and feel less safe, less valued and more alone because of it. The true measure of a society is how it treats those who depend on others. We should be building a culture of care, not one that normalises helping people to die. They deserve better. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

These barbaric monsters like @melanieselwood who advocate for baby torture and murder are exposed by this bill. There is no reason for a late term abortion. Ever. It is monstrously cruel to the baby and it does not fix a single health problem for the mother that could not be fixed by inducing a live delivery early. The sole reason for feticide in a late term abortion is to kill the child. 75% of late term abortions in SA kill perfectly healthy children and unlike Melanie, I don't think we should be killing the disabled children either. Help us defeat the evil Greens and pass the first prolife bill in Australian history next Wednesday as we seek to ban third trimester abortion👇 SA RALLY FOR BABIES | Wednesday 17 June | 5.30-6.30PM North Terrace, outside SA Parliament | We need you ❤️

If you cared about women, you wouldn’t degrade yourself by using this kind of language. You’re not defending women; you’re just being hateful. (2)
