Myktybek Orolbai got 19 takedowns on Chris Curtis this weekend That's more than 1 takedown per minute The system he used was surprisingly simple too Read this if you want to learn it

Diaz-Perry is perfect. Love everything about what MVP is doing with this event. Just need some prospects on the card now and it's done.

@StuartAustinMMA what do you do differently? I've been sitting away and grabbing the near ankle to scramble don't know how well it transfers to MMA what worries me about kimura grip is person holding the back body lock can drop on a single to lift their opponent for a slam like Orolbai did in R3

@OpenNoteGrapple I personally don't find the grips that hard to break, the way I teach none of my guys struggle, obviously we'll see the difference as they move up the levels (especially as the small lads come through). Also, people have to learn to kimura/switch/granny scramble.

MMA grappling needs an answer to rear body locks you hardly have room to hand fight because you're being held against the fence you either need to turn in for under hooks, head post on the fence like volk did against islam, or scramble from quad pod standing upright is death

@zviadWapasha and this gets at the point of my original tweet random bjj coaches made the podcast rounds to sell something new to people and have slowly walked back most of their claims not sure if they're just trying to sell stuff or they misunderstood what they read

@OpenNoteGrapple In CLA there should be a moment for free sparring, for positional sparring, for technique demo, for constrained games, etc. It's not about you either do just this or just that, all have it's place. It's more about how you should bias the training session with each of these tools

@zviadWapasha how you can organize practice accordingly I agree general research is helpful but studying specifics is also compelling to me

@zviadWapasha and my point is that the loudest proponents of adopting CLA use jargon to make it seem like they're doing something magical regardless I'm still interested in reading specific studies on grappling as I'm curious about what changes with two participants playing separate games and

@zviadWapasha people claim they eliminate direct instruction to adopt "CLA style training" I think that misunderstands its value and prevents people from exploring complicated martial arts like jiujitsu eliminating direct instruction works better in sports like tennis, baseball, etc..

@OpenNoteGrapple 1:1 to what? There's no "1" in CLA, there's no specific drill or way to drill, it's just a set of evidences about how certain levers (variability, external vs internal, verbal cues) should be manipulated to improve skill transfer. It can be applied to any drill you already do

@zviadWapasha I haven't found any compelling CLA research on martial arts lots on tennis, baseball, etc. not saying it isn't applicable but I don't think it's as 1:1 as people are claiming it is

@OpenNoteGrapple Actually reading this literature nobody bothers to. People are relying on random bjj coaches to know what cla and ecological approaches are. Just read actual experts, it's the consensus today in skill acquisition
