@vikramchandra Interesting statistic but it proves demographics, not global reach. Football is global because 200+ nations participate in its ecosystem. Cricket benefits from a few extremely populous countries. country’s population isn’t the same as a sport’s worldwide presence.

The FIFA World Cup is, no doubt, the biggest global single-sport tournament, with a quarter of all countries present. But if you go by population, the numbers are interesting. The 20 countries that took part in the 2026 Cricket T20 World Cup have a population of 2.50 billion people. The 48 countries that are taking part in the 2026 Football World Cup have a combined population of only 2.25 billion! The gap would be more if Bangladesh hadn't dropped out this year - the combined population of countries playing in the 2024 T20 World Cup was a whopping 2.65 billion. Obviously India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan contribute hugely to those numbers - but countries like Italy have also chipped in - present for the cricket T20 World Cup but not football! It's also interesting that out of the top 10 countries by population in the world, only 2 are playing the FIFA World Cup - the US and Brazil! India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia and Ethiopia are all missing. Having said that, it's certainly true that football is still the biggest global sport because virtually all countries in the world will watch this World Cup! Cricket would not be watched by the vast majority of nations.

@FarziCricketer As someone who enjoys both, cricket doesn’t need defending. It’s a great sport but comparing its global reach with football is like comparing a successful national business with a multinational giant. One dominates a few markets. Other dominates the planet.

@grok @NikhilRxx10 @RahulRajVerse Calling yourself a Rational Thinker and then arguing with 10 consecutive explanations of the same point is certainly a fascinating case study. At some stage, “Where is the answer?” becomes “I didn’t like the answer.”

No, it's merit-based fairness, not artificial equality. Slots track today's realities—FIFA rankings, league strength, academies, and results—not just old trophies. UEFA and CONMEBOL still produce the deepest talent pools and best teams. Random or equal slots would flood groups with mismatches, kill competitiveness, and reduce the tournament's global appeal (and revenue that funds development everywhere). Expansion already gave AFC/CAF more spots than before. Every nation qualifies the same way: earn it on the pitch. That's the practical path to real progress.

@NikhilRxx10 @grok @RahulRajVerse At this stage you are not debating me. You are debating the answer you asked for and didn’t like. That’s a difficult opponent to beat.

The problem with cricket and its future is that almost 90% of its global revenue comes from Indians watching the sport. If Indians completely stopped watching cricket, many foreign players would have to take up full-time jobs just to support their cricket careers. That shows how dependent global cricket is on one market. Comparing cricket’s global popularity with football is simply ludicrous.

FIFA WCs are only won by European & South American teams. So, why do they call it a world cup? Why not call it a European-American Cup instead? Other nations are just there for sake of participation but we all know at very start of tournament that only 2 continents has chance!

@NikhilRxx10 @grok @RahulRajVerse You tagged Grok expecting backup. Grok basically said UEFA and CONMEBOL get more slots because they’re stronger and consistently produce better teams. That’s… literally my point.

@NikhilRxx10 @RahulRajVerse They consistently produce the strongest teams and deepest competition. FIFA balances merit with global representation. That’s why the strongest regions still receive most places.

Uncle, what kind of logic is this? Europe and South America won most World Cups, so they get more slots? What kind of nonsense is that? Only a low iQ person would blindly believe it. Every World Cup is a fresh tournament, so what does historical performance have to do with slot allocation today? If you keep giving more slots to regions that are already considered strong, wouldn't the probability of the World Cup winner coming from those regions be much higher almost 90%? Result is already known.. its because of viewership, revenue, and to keep competitiveness to ensure no boring elements comes in.. btw why aren't draws are random?

@NikhilRxx10 @RahulRajVerse FIFA slots are earned, not gifted. Europe & South America have won every World Cup so they get more places. Football has 200+ nations chasing qualification. Cricket struggles to get 20

@PMukundhan8 @Rajiv1841 If Indian football fans only watched every 4 years, broadcasters wouldn’t spend billions on Premier League Champions League and World Cup rights. Companies follow audiences. You are arguing against market itself.

@Garvo_Gujarati @Rajiv1841 You say “only club games” as if club football is some small side event. Champions League, Premier League, La Liga and other top leagues attract hundreds of millions of viewers every season. World Cup is football’s peak, not its entire existence.

🇮🇳 THREAD: India has 1.4+ billion people. Yet we struggle to qualify for FIFA World Cup and often underperform at Olympics..problem isn’t talent. Millions of talented children are never discovered. I’m just an ordinary Indian with a vision. 🧵👇 #IndianFootball #Olympics
