@knockforaloop @TinyWriterLaura Yeah, that's a solid point. It's very common over there, but not really on Sufficient Velocity or Spacebattles. IIRC, first-person present tense and third-person past tense are the most common styles on those sites.

this is a good essay but fanfic isn’t driving it. strangely the vast majority of fanfic is in 3rd-person & it’s unusual to stumble across a 1st-person fic for an established ship (canon or not). even a lot of self-inserts are 3rd-person, & reader-inserts tend towards 2nd-person

I wrote about this trend in modern booktok-style romance where readers very much prefer first-person—to the point of flat out refusing to read the more traditional third-person—and what that means for literary culture as a whole.
