The Prothean Institute studies what makes civilisations work and what makes them fail. Not as moral commentary. As structural, mechanical, predictive analysis. The project covers three connected layers. The civilisational substrate — the inherited code of faith, family, honour, and behavioural standards that produces cohesion when transmitted and collapse when it isn't. The institutional architecture — the design, capture, and decay of the structures that translate that substrate into governable order. And the political method — what actually works against a captured environment, studied across operators of every partisan stripe. The analytical anchor is Madison's insight in Federalist No. 51: durable institutions produce good outcomes from self-interested people. They do not rely on virtuous ones. Applied honestly, the standard reframes everything downstream. Civilisational decline is not moral failure. It is structural failure that became rational for the actors involved. The corrective is structural too. Three things are happening at once across the late-modern Anglosphere. American politics has diverged from the rest of the West. Western societies have diverged from their own historical foundations. And Anglosphere political classes have converged with each other — on a managed-decline trajectory — while their countries diverge from their own past. The Divergent Societies series maps how. A lot of people swallowed the "migration hasn't raised living standards" claim whole. I'm not sold on Mark's view, but I find it thought-provoking and absolutely worth taking seriously. It’s nearly impossible to prove one way or another empirically, because we can’t re-run the experiment. Can only debate theory. One big reason to think migration may have lifted living standards is scale economies. Mark uses Sweden as a counterfactual, but the *disanalogy* with Sweden is that Sweden is enmeshed in Europe and can enjoy increasing returns to scale as the EU population grows. In contrast, we’re geographically isolated, so domestic scale is relatively more important. As Mark himself said in the pod, Australia’s postwar industrialisation couldn't have happened on the scale it did without migrants… So did the postwar industrialisation not lift incomes per capita?
B.W.Jackson@BWJacksonX

@peter_tulip @JosephNWalker Very interesting indeed. Mark Cully, in particular, makes a point that should be obvious but is not widely appreciated. Mass immigration has made our economy much bigger. But it has not made us any better off on a per capita basis.

Strong, masculine leadership matters not because a woman is passive, but because someone must be willing to architect the conditions in which love can keep living.

@zoecabina @BILD These stories are so hard to even comprehend and not get emotional about. What kind of evil sociopath can see a story like this and their first instinct is to hide the targedy to protect the murderous perpetrators from the rightful fury of the public.

Imagine the Mayflower lands, settlers disembark, then tell the Indians to build them houses, pay them welfare and feed them. All while telling the Indians they are inferior. It's hilarious in how ridiculous the comparison of modern day immigrants is to settlers that literally built the country.

Overwhelming majority of billionaire “wealth” consists of unrealised gains that exist solely on paper You can technically create a company, issue 1 billion shares, sell 1 share for 1 dollar - and for 10 minutes you can be a paper billionaire

New research: we have studied the wealth of the 200 Californian billionaires and what they effectively pay in tax. From Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) to Sergei Brin and Larry Page (Alphabet), the results are edifying. 🧵 nytimes.com/interactive/20…

@johnjeroo @JosephNWalker It's actually apparent governments have used immigration to create economic activity to avoid GDP recessions. GDP per capita tells the story, but it's arguable that immigration is a function of low GDP growth, for political reasons. Not the reverse.

Around the world, young women are facing a profound mental health crisis. Compared to men: · Canada: Girls in grades 7-12 are far more likely to experience fair to poor mental health, compared to boys. · Denmark: Females 16-24 are twice as likely to have poor mental health. · Finland: Fifteen-year-old girls are twice as likely to have depressive symptoms. · Sweden: Females 16-29 are twice as likely to have severe anxiety. · United Kingdom: A recent study found young women are more angry, pessimistic, and left-wing than their male peers · United States: Females 18-21 years old are twice as likely as men to report a broad range of problems such as “Felt nervous all/most of the time in past 30 days.” endtodv.org/pr/how-feminis…

Voters are not moving further right, the mainstream political parties are driving further left, leaving the majority of Australia's population now on the right of both major parties. It goes way beyond just immigration, it reflects a rejection of the overall liberal democratic project which has delivered the worst cost of living, over regulation, collapsed social and cultural fabric and institutions no-one trusts.

This is exactly the problem One Nation faces, and every Anglosphere populist-right party. The preselection due diligence for a small party organisation can be inadequate, and the social cost to candidates filters out many competent individuals with existing careers. The candidates who can stomach a divisive campaign often win, but lack the ministerial depth to govern. One Nation might win seats, even government. But ministerial competence, parliamentary discipline, and execution capability are built across decades in established parties or senior business roles. A breakthrough victory without the bench depth produces a government mired in scandal, incompetence, and inability to deliver on the mandate — which then becomes the case against the entire reform project. The Madisonian question is how to build the bench while the cultural filter is still operating against you. That's the problem the Anglosphere right hasn't solved — and the one the Prothean Institute exists to address. protheaninstitute.com

"God is dead, and we killed him." Spake Zarathustra. The Prothean Institute proposes a mechanism by which the features of Christianity that created Western civilisation can be sustained — to some extent — in its absence. "Thus Spake Ilos" whitepaper develops the full argument. The starting point is honest. Christianity was the operating system. Henrich described the applications. You cannot keep running the applications indefinitely after the operating system is removed — but some applications run standalone, some need partial OS support, and some cannot run at all without the full architecture. Applications that survive standalone: rule of law, scientific method, formal property rights, contractual cooperation. These have been successfully ported to non-Christian societies through institutional adoption. The form does the work without requiring the underlying belief. Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan all run these natively. Applications that need partial OS support: trust of strangers, low corruption, civic conscientiousness, deferred gratification. These can be partially sustained through civic institutions, professional ethics, and visible reputation systems — but they degrade faster than the religious original because the substitutes require continuous active maintenance whereas religion did the work passively. The post-Christian West is currently exhausting the inherited stock. Applications that cannot run without the full operating system: the meaningful framing of suffering, the moral seriousness that makes large-scale self-sacrifice rational, the willingness to defer present consumption for future generations, the answer to why bother when material conditions are met, and the demographic substrate — the simple willingness to have children and transmit the code forward. These are the categories where the post-Christian West is visibly failing. Fertility collapse is the clearest signal. The mental health crisis. The inability to defend the civilisation against attack. All downstream of features that required the religious architecture that secular substitutes cannot replicate. What made Christianity work as the operating system, and what the secular alternatives lack: a universal claim that crossed in-group cooperation limits, internalised enforcement through divine surveillance, the behavioural code embedded in memorable narrative rather than abstract rule, redemption from shame paired with the possibility of honour, explicit fertility valuation, multiple modes of participation for different temperaments, and crucially, a time horizon long enough to make present sacrifice rational. Eternal judgement solved the discount-rate problem that secular ideologies cannot. The mechanism Prothean Institute proposes is not religious revival on demand — belief cannot be willed into existence and dishonest belief is worse than honest absence. It is the deliberate cultivation of practice with or without belief: the structural reconstruction of the architectural elements that the religious original carried passively. Internalised enforcement through civic shame and honour rather than divine surveillance. Behavioural codes transmitted through narrative, logic, rationality and example rather than abstract principle. A time horizon extended through cultural and institutional commitments that bind future generations. Multiple modes of participation that accommodate different temperaments without demanding uniform belief. This is not a full restoration. The original carrier was more efficient than any secular substitute. But the function can be partially reconstructed among elite leaders — and partial reconstruction is the difference between a civilisation that decays into a museum and one that retains the capacity to renew itself. The features mapped onto institutional structure can survive. The features that depended on the religious architecture cannot survive untouched, but the architecture itself can be partially rebuilt by people who understand what was lost and what made it work. Thus Spake Ilos develops the full mechanism — what was actually being transmitted, what made Christianity uniquely effective as transmission technology, and how the function might be restored without requiring the original carrier: protheaninstitute.com

Ten years of results and the verdict is still pending? By any reasonable standard the verdict was in by 2020. This is a textbook description of competent statecraft. Identify leverage. Restructure the calculation. Make the negotiation revolve around reality rather than principle. The Spectator just summarised the method without using the word. The "open question" framing is the giveaway. The persistence of the reservation is the finding worth examining. This is the "Idiot Reading" in its polished form. Paper 1 of The Divergent Societies from Prothean Institute series develops it in detail: protheaninstitute.com

Donald Trump's underlying habit is recognisable: identify vulnerability, alter the calculation of other players, and make the negotiation revolve around leverage rather than principle. Trump identifies pressure points, determines who has the most to lose, and attempts to rearrange the negotiation around that reality. Whether Trump’s tactics will work this time remains an open question. The Middle East has a habit of humiliating grand strategies. Infrastructure projects can stall, alliances can fracture, and ceasefires can easily collapse. Regimes that appear isolated can prove remarkably resilient. The latest American strikes serve as a reminder that beneath the negotiations and the ceasefire lies a much larger contest over who will shape the Middle East’s future. ✍️ Jonathan Sacerdoti Article | spectator.com/article/donald…

Until the 80s, an average man on an average wage could buy an average house and an average car and afford a wife and two kids. Now the same requires four average incomes. Part of it is over regulation of housing, part of it is over regulation of business destroying productivity, part of it is women's participation in the workforce and part of it is higher lifestyle expectations. The first two are entirely the cost of increasingly socialist government.
