Today’s “Odd Tank” is the 🇺🇸 American ‘M50 Ontos’ Built in the 1950’s, this Airborne Tank Destroyer would be built on the same running gear as the M56 Scorpion. However instead of having an open platform and a single gun, the Ontos would be enclosed and have 6 recoilless rifles. The US Army would cancel their order, but the US Marines would adopt the Ontos and 297 vehicles would be produced. The main armament would consist of an array of six 105mm ‘106mm M40A1’ Recoilless Rifles. -Note the Recoilless rifle used 105mm ammunition labeled as 106mm ammo to prevent logistical issues with traditional 105mm tank ammo.
