Since the internet has minted ten thousand new AWACS experts in the last 24-hours, here's some handy data showing US Air Force's 2023-24 E-3 AWACS retirements. In total, the USAF let go of more than a dozen E-3 aircraft in the 2023-2024 timeframe. These airframes were sent into storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) at Davis-Monthan AFB while the community waits for the E-7 transition or whatever other plan the USAF ultimately seeks for the AMTI mission.

This aircraft is #1 of the two E-7's funded under the original MTA contract awarded during the Biden administration. Tracking data confirms that 81-0005 was one of the E-3G Sentries that was deployed to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia for Operation Epic Fury. The U.S. Air Force’s fleet of E-3s is down from 16 to 15.

Pictures show the total loss of 81-0005, an E-3G “Sentry” Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Aircraft with the U.S. Air Force’s 552nd Air Control Wing based out of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, following yesterday’s Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The strike appears to have purposefully targeted the most important part of the E-3, that being rear of the aircraft which holds its rotating radar dome, containing several sensitive instruments including antennas for the E-3’s AN/APY-2 Surveillance Radar System.

The Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia was apparently bigger than first thought, with reports of damage to multiple refueling aircraft, an E-3 Sentry AWACS, and injuries to at least 10 U.S. troops.

BREAKING: According to this satellite image taken by Landsat 8/9, it appears that, in addition to the KC-135R Stratotankers of the U.S. Air Force, at least one or two E-3G Sentry AWACS has also been destroyed in the ballistic missile strike carried out by the IRGC Aerospace Force at Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia, on March 27, 2026.
In fact, it appears that, the primary target of the IRGCASF was the E-3Gs of the USAF parked there, not the KC-135Rs. However, they also managed to destroy several KC-135Rs.
What makes this even more personal for me is that I had previously met and photographed those E-3G Sentry AWACS aircraft weeks before start of this war for my book on Op. Epic Fury.
