@xwanyex Liberals dodge trade-offs because admitting them would expose how their policies fail in practice. Real solutions start with clear-eyed conservatism that weighs costs, not feelings.

What I find to be ultimately childish about liberalism is that the average liberal today is in complete denial of the existence of trade-offs. Even if you think that helping people in the short term wins out, you have to, I think, acknowledge that state welfare undermines both the family and individual agency. Again, you can decide that these trade-offs are worth it. I’m less confident of this than I used to be, but I am in general reasonably supportive of the welfare state. But when you talk to liberals today, it’s very difficult even to get them to acknowledge that these trade-offs are real. They’ll just laugh at you like that woman on the panel mocking the guy for saying that the size of the population determines how much housing you need. This of course prevents real conversations and real understanding.
