Chosun's misleading English headline of its analysis piece citing experts has gone viral here on X. Nowhere in the story does it say the US is considering. It's an interview with experts who believe it could be a possibility. 🤦‍♂️

⚡️ South Korean media announced that the US has faced a shortage of air defense systems and missiles just 48 hours after the start of the terrorist invasion of Islamic Iran and is seeking to evacuate its THAAD and Patriot systems from the Korean Peninsula and Japan and transfer them to the Middle East

I find it quite tragic that today’s kids almost never experience the liminality of physical abundance. Abundance on an LED screen = stress Abundance on shelves that you wander through with a person you love = extreme gratitude

@john_ssuh I've been thinking these days that the threshold for getting above a 1500 should be much harder. with personalized SAT tests, we could continue to make it an apt way to test basic academics while raising the bar for higher level skills and knowledge

The black / white pill no one wants to discuss: How many hours / effort does it actually take to get a 4.0 gpa / 1500 SAT score for a 25 percentile academically competent student? Answer: rather trivial given grade inflation and how easy standardized exams have become AI tutors will make it obvious that academics in current K-12 is actually extremely trivial. This will in turn free up time for these kids to get through learning basic knowledge and building up cognitive competency so that they can spend more time on extracurricular activities, personal projects, sports, or jobs - all of which are more valuable experiences than watching TikTok bored out of their minds in school wasting their most precious childhood, which all parents and students will come around.

Used to be the best source of English material on Korea. Too bad the author went full political zealot. Great run from inception till 2013-ish. askakorean.blogspot.com

Affirm. AskAKorean talked about this 15+ years ago from a political lens. Applied even more so culturally. Korea has a tendency to take things to their logical conclusions…for better or worse.
Oliver Hsu@oyhsu

It’s fairly consensus now that South Korea is a leading indicator for consumer culture. But few understand that while this usually refers to entertainment (kpop/kdramas), it’s just as true in broader cultural behaviors (looksmaxxing, gender wars, degen retail trading).

@oyhsu fast internet access wherever you are. hyper fast spread of information. no cultural inertia built up due to fast industrial development. leading to fast adaptation of any new tech. always vying for any new edge. acknowledgment of non-reachable status.

@halogen1048576 @oyhsu wonder what makes Chinese mainstream online culture (Chinese time of our lives) to be more of a subject of attention in the U.S. as compared to Korea - simplistic explanation would be just scale and size of China relative to Korea but I think there's more than that.

@samhcarter @mttjon @oyhsu @samhcarter we'll talk more soon but curious about this point of risk capital and the threshold it would require to foster "juggernauts in core verticals". Something also to be said about the small and relatively homogenous consumer population in S. Korea.

@mttjon @oyhsu I *think* it is lack of options + access to risk capital. Google, Meta, Bytedance, Amazon, Apple, Uber, DoorDash, etc are such juggernauts in their core verticals that consolidation makes less sense than in countries that only support one or two maps, delivery apps, etc.

@samhcarter @mttjon @oyhsu Also a result of faster adoption rates thus easier to horizontally integrate in services once you have a core set of users

@oliverwkim Curious as to how this statement holds up in context of today's digital-innovation driven markets vs the industrial ones that Koreans grew to dominate. And while entrepreneurialism grew in fervor, certain Confucian dynamics would continue to remain - namely hierarchicalism.

Notions of what cultural traits are "good" for development are quite malleable. In an 1971 IMF report, "Korea's Export Success, 1960-69", "the conservative Confucian disdain for engaging in business" is cited as an *obstacle* to export-led growth:

@HipCityReg Likewise super curious about your questions and answers to no. 1 - is there a particular reason for the emphasis on self-professing as opposed to? Faith curious or...? cc'ing @hiromurose on this thread also

I could not applaud this more When I was determining my Interact Research Residency proposal I submitted two options 1 - How should a self-professing Christian engage in their technological environment, especially AI? (winner) 2 - What should our next dominant aesthetic be? We struggle to imagine new futures because we can’t visualize anything new. It’s similar to how watching a movie, makes reading the associated book easier. Dune did this for me. Can’t wait to see the work that comes out of this.

After 5.5 years and selling my startup to @tryramp, I wrapped up my time last month. I first joined Ramp as employee #20 in March 2020 where I was an early designer and product lead. I left 2.5 years in to found Venue, a procurement automation company that Sequoia backed and Ramp acquired a year later. With the Venue team, we led Ramp’s procurement product from inception to thousands of customers and billions in payment volume. And most recently over the summer, I joined our Applied AI team to help start @RampLabs and launch Agent Fill and Ramp Sheets. I’m grateful to have been a part of the Ramp journey. I saw what exceptional looks like and how that’s evolved from a 20-person startup to a $32B company. Many people mention eng velocity as the key to Ramp’s success but it all starts with the people. Eric & Karim are world class recruiters and frequently take bets on early talent. Hiring well is one of the greatest compounders in company building - nearly all of Ramp’s early hires were referrals. Even at its scale today, I’m amazed at how much time they prioritize on recruiting. Thank you @eglyman @karimatiyeh for taking a bet on me twice, @genejaelee for being my Korean older brother, and @geoffintech @diegozaks for their product & design masterclass. As for what’s next, I’m excited to share more soon.
