We got featured in the @sfstandard this week. The story is about a new industry. Interview prep now runs up to $1,000/hour. People paying thousands for one shot at OpenAI, Anthropic, or DeepMind. On Blind, job seekers call it theft. Coaches preying on people at their lowest. Here is what stays with me. The people who need the most help have the least money to buy it. I did not go to college. My parents worked odd hours. Nobody in my family knew one person in tech. If getting in the door cost four figures an hour, I never get in the door. So we built the opposite. 600,000 people joined @ADPList in the last year. 90% of our mentors coach for free. No trial. No lead magnet. Free, because someone once did the same for them. A stranger who has sat in your seat, knows the room, and wants you to make it. Practice has a price. Belief has none. Your zip code should not decide who gets a shot. That is the work.

Designers are the most underrated people in tech. Engineers get the credit for building the product. PMs get the credit for shipping it. But designers? Designers are the reason anyone wants to use it in the first place. And this goes back to something @johnmaeda (former Head of Design at MIT Media Lab) said: "Design is the body language of your product. It tells people how to feel before they even read a word." What he meant is that design isn't decoration. Design is the first impression, the trust signal, the reason someone stays or leaves in the first three seconds. And nobody talks about that. Designers are the ones fighting for the user when everyone else is fighting for the deadline. They're the ones saying "this flow doesn't make sense." They slow things down to make them right, then get blamed for it. McKinsey studied this: companies that invest in design OUTPERFORM their industry by two to one in revenue growth. Design isn't a nice-to-have. It's the highest-ROI investment most companies ignore. Designers don't get the credit. They just make the product worth using.

The hottest job in tech right now is not what you think. It's not coding anymore. And if you feel like you missed the boat because you can't code, this one's for you. So here's what's happening. Instagram just posted a Product Designer job in SF that pays up to $278K a year. Sesame has a Product Designer role at $280K. Serval, up to $300K. And Metric Geo is paying $300K for a Founding Product Designer. But here's the kicker, none of these are senior, principal, or staff roles. These are just Product Designer. The average product designer in America makes about $120K. These companies are paying more than double. Why? Because AI broke something. It made shipping code so easy that everyone can build now. The bottleneck isn't engineering anymore -> it's taste (still true). It's knowing what to build. It's making something that actually feels human in a world where every product is starting to look the same AI-generated slop. And the irony is brutal. For the last 20 years, they told kids: learn to code, it's the safe path. But software engineering job postings have dropped 33% since 2020. CS grads are sitting at 6.1% unemployment. Yes, based on @lennysan's research, design jobs have plateaued but it's temporary (I believe so). As someone who used to be a designer and now runs a company hiring them, the people winning in the AI era aren't the ones who can write the most code. They're the ones who know what's worth building. Taste just became the most valuable skill in tech. Gear up designers, it's a ride.

Very interesting story. At this event, I met the founder @felixleezd of ADPList @ADPList . I remember when I was at the beginning of my career, I found mentors through ADPList. In an industry that moves so fast, it’s hard to learn things from school or books. The most valuable way to grow is by learning directly from people in the industry. I was lucky to be mentored by designers from @Apple , @Google , @amazon and more. Years later, I’m still in touch with them. They were incredibly inspiring, knowledgeable, and kind, and I’m so grateful for the support they gave me. Over the years, I also became a mentor on ADPList. And somehow, without planning it, I met the founder here in San Francisco. What a miracle. Full circle. 💫
