@Mikey_Whitehead Duboisia leichhardtii. Sorry, I couldn't think of the name the other day or I would have included it.

@TorstenW Wow. Ok. Thanks for correcting me on that. Do you know what the third species is?

Interesting botano-pharmacological fact about the contaminated spinach: The likely culprit was Datura. Those alkaloids from Datura that cause delirium are also the active ingredient in your travel sickness medications. It's the dose that makes the poison.

@Mikey_Whitehead There are no hopwoodii plantations. It's D.myoporoides and hybrids with a third species. Buscopan used to label itself as Hopwoodii a few years ago, but corrected the label. I think this was likely to try and get around the D.myoporoides legislation, which itself promotes cartels

A major source of these alkaloids for pharma production are plantations of arid Australian native Duboisia hopwoodii. Certain chemotypes of this plant have a rich history of extensive trade by indigenous Australians. abc.net.au/news/2021-11-1…

@ACTINOSProject @EGAPolicy If we had pics of the leaves we could probably get this identified in minutes. I grow all the Daturas and a few Mandragora spp. for example. I say 'probably' because presumable they are hydroponically grown juvenile leaves which would make them less distinct. Process is so slow.

Several plants could do this. There’s a curious connection between ‘mandrake’ & spinach, which caused outbreaks of food poisoning in Italy in 2017 & more recently, this October. What the botanical link might be is a mystery to me… @EGAPolicy might know? smh.com.au/national/conta…

We confirm that Jordan Shank’s home was firebombed last night. He is safe. We hope that every possible police resource is dedicated today to securing evidence and intel. It might even warrant a Strike Force focused upon terrorism and attempted homicide rather than dangerous jokes.

@BeachPhilosophy It's troubling that this says australian seeds. So either they've contaminated the australian stock by mixing or they are falsely labelling imported seeds as australian. Country or origin labels are not optional.

NATIONAL RECALL OF SOME POPPY SEEDS: People are now advised to check the poppy seeds in their kitchens following a nationwide recall of poppy seed products linked to poisoning. Read more on The Pulse thepulse.org.au/2022/11/15/nat…

@TangledPixies1 @AODMediaWatch @NSWHealth @ABCmediawatch Interesting. How are seeds with such high thebaine content making it into supermarkets. Normally only specially bred poppy varieties for pharmaceutical products contain levels like this. Are pharmaceutical poppy farms supplying these seeds?

@NSWHealth @ABCmediawatch @AODMediaWatch Now people have been left thinking this is an overdose of morphine. Because the public messaging hasn't been clear, how dangerous! Thebaine must be identified. First ever widespread thebaine poisoning event!!

Ahead of tomorrow's livestream, here's @COMPASSPathway consultant @HamiltonMorris, in his own words, explaining that it's *always* been about the money (and fantasizing about diving into a pool of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck). Insight into why he defends Thiel & Angermayer?

@ACTINOSProject @harrodme @NSWHealth Just to clarify, I've done it once - decades ago. I just know lots of people who do. Including many who are patients with inadequate pain management or ex clinical morphine addicts. Not your usual recreational users. They all deserve protection from an unsafe food product.

@harrodme @TorstenW @NSWHealth I think that the concern being expressed, by a group of very experienced people who use poppy washes with some regularity- and hence familiarity- is that the warnings provided would not appear to be as protective as they believe they should be, in their current form.

NSW Health is warning people about the dangers of consuming large amounts of poppy seeds after at least eight people in NSW presented to hospital with severe poisoning soon after ingestion. More cases have been reported interstate.

@NSWHealth @1darren1Dmr @VicGovDH seem to think this doesn't exist and prefer to demonise drug users. yes, 40g of poppy seeds can be a single serve and can easily cause toxic effect from the thebaine batch that's still on the shelves. Please educate yourself about ethnic recipes.

@harrodme @NSWHealth @ACTINOSProject read it properly. It is heat sensitive at dry baking temps ie around 200c. It is not degraded in wet dough or filling matrices which generally don't go much above 100c.

@harrodme @NSWHealth @1darren1Dmr @VicGovDH It's a stupid distinction because the critical matter here is quantity, not intent. Telling someone that 50g of culinary seed is Ok while 50g of drug wash is not will bite them in the ass.

@ACTINOSProject @NSWHealth @TorstenW We appear to be seeing the first widespread thebaine poisoning outbreak from poppy seeds. Thebaine doesn't act like other opioids, it causes convulsions like strychnine. High quantities shouldn't be in food.
