In Spring 2007, after many attempts, I was finally allowed into Iran for my first (and alas last) visit. My guide and interpreter was soon afterwards jailed on grotesquely false charges of spying, so I cannot return. @ClarkeMicah Hitchens’ trick is to downplay the brutality of Iran’s regime not out of conviction, but because pretending it’s “misunderstood” lets him posture as the lone adult in the room while dodging the awkward truth that the case for war is hollow even without sanitising the regime.

The picture of me in Soviet restaurant here was taken in the Aragvi, a large and beautifully decorated restaurant on what was then Gorky Street in Moscow ( previously and now, Tverskaya). It closed and reopened but I don’t know if it’s operating now. It was a huge surprise in that grey city.
