Whenever I go to a new country, I try to learn one or two lines of the local language to tell the immigration officer. They usually feel happy, that an Indian is trying. It dispels a lot of negative stereotypes about us being boorish and ill behaved tourists.
In Shanghai, I said, "Ni hao," and got a little smile.
In Paris, I said, "Bonjour mademoiselle," and she blew me a kiss.
In Hanoi, I said, "Xin chào," and it was a breeze through the queue.
In Kuala Lumpur, I said, "Selamat," and got a beaming smile and a "Selamat" in return.
In Lisbon, I greeted the stern young woman behind the desk. "God tumhara bhala karega my daughter!" The immigration officer's eyes lit up. "Aaj shyaam ko party karenga men. Guitar mangta hai," she said.

@peeleraja You probably don't know the insider thing. I remember my early days in Bangalore. May be 12-13 years back. Hotels, restaurants and mess have found a hack to serve saambaar and naariyal chutney. They prepare a powder much in advance. They just add water every day and heat.

Today in Parliament, I delivered a speech titled ’I Do Not Oppose, I Rise to Propose.’ In Parliament today I spoke about three everyday anxieties of ordinary Indians and proposed practical reforms. (1) Allow optional Joint Filing of Income Tax Returns so married couples with uneven incomes are not penalised.* (2) Restore Full Income Tax Exemption on Disability Pensions for all wounded soldiers, not only those invalided out of service.* (3) End penalty charges on bank accounts for not maintaining Minimum Account Balance. I rose to propose solutions that make the system fairer, more humane and more just.
