I don't like to be constrained by historical precedents, though it's never wise to ignore them like so many on the right are doing. There is a path for Republicans to turn around their current state of electoral despair. They just seem hellbent on not taking it, just giving up.

Retail sales -0.2%, though it could've been worse. Forecasts ranged from -0.8% to 0.4%, with the consensus -0.4%. But it's the Employment Situation that's really bad. The jobs report showed total nonfarm payrolls were -92,000. Yep, the U.S. economy lost -92k jobs in February. Only 10k of it came from the federal government. Manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs and private payrolls overall lost 86,000. The labor force participation rate continued to slide, now at 62 flat. One of the most positive developments of the first Trump Administration was that the unemployment rate was falling AND labor force participation was rising, hitting the critical 63% threshold and remaining largely until the lockdowns.
