@katieemorann Absolutely. What makes for a good story doesn’t change much, though how you tell and convey it the medium can guide. I sometimes treat chapters like episodes for the sake of determining where to begin, end and why.

Writers- do you think watching movies helps your writing?

@Raebourn One of the primary reasons I help my storytelling students adapt the tools to suit their mind, rather than enforce any particular model for what you should, should not & why. You might want to tag just the few folks that you’d come back to. Build from that your list of guides.

Unpopular opinion: 99% of the #WritingCommunity is just winging it and have no clue what they’re doing. (Myself included 😂) The amount of conflicting advice I’ve received this week is astounding.

@jodyjsperling My dad did, both personally and professionally, for many years. Mom was a journalist as well. Grandma did in secret, which we learned at her funeral—kept a poem that she’d written in a locked drawer with instructions to read it at the service. I’m sure there are more though.

Does anyone else in your family write?

I think I can count on a single hand the number of stories ( much less games ) that compelled me ‘again’ to play *as soon as* I reached the end. Exocolonist is one of them. Congrats on the nomination, it’s well-earned.

@J_WBerry @Latina_Schatje Agreed. Faculty are so overwhelmed by conflicting demands that they often don’t have the time or the means to an individual ‘teach’. Which is at least in part a consequence of schools being turned into system to normalize folks for what society needs.

@jcertherealist @Latina_Schatje I was always best at anything visual - symmetry, area & mechanics in physics. If I could mentally picture something, it really helped. I still can’t recite my times tables, despite the abuse I got from the teacher who concluded I just wasn’t trying. Teaching has got to change.

Why do folks hate math so much?

@J_WBerry @Latina_Schatje I intrinsically understood part of calc, but not the other half. And now I can’t remember, “Which one was that?” As a visual and auditory person, I recall the songs about logarithms. And how to ‘block’ numbers fast. But as for geometric proofs—according to the rules?—don’t ask.

@Latina_Schatje It’s not the maths itself. It’s because it’s taught by people who are naturally good at it, in a way that suits people who are naturally good at it. If your brain works differently, that style doesn’t work, and maths teachers are usually very impatient and think the work is easy.

@AlexWoodroe “I am tired of humans and their shenanigans.” I forget the study—it was somewhat long ago—but it said that among the more ‘human’ expressions a dog can possess, ‘frustration, exasperation and disgust’ everyone one of them knows.

@agletterman Audio first. Then I use a handwriting-to-text device. Fewer distractions that way, and I’m less likely to be attacked by vengeful trees.

Writers! Handwritten notes or typed notes?

Writers need to stop glamorizing working yourself to the point where you're burned out and don't want to write anymore. It's okay to take breaks. Don't sacrifice your mental health so that your WIP will be finished this week instead of next. Prioritize yourself over your story.

@KevinCGlenn1 My condolences. I don’t know if this will be of much consolation, but after the three family members I’ve buried this year, I can tell you that grief is different each time. So make sure to forgive yourself when you’re not at you’re best. And try to take things in little steps.

Just found out an old friend of mine just died and I’m not handling it very well.

@JulieWritesFic I revisited the first chapter and asked, “what’s at the heart of this?” Led me down a long winding path to thirty new chapters, two more books and the delight again at being surprised.
