Your regular reminder that, had the world followed France and built nuclear reactors half a century ago, there would now be no rows about decarbonisation, no IPCC, no Greta Thunberg marches. The whole problem was created by the green movement.

@malcolm_stack Andrew Field's 'Prelude to Waterloo: Quatre Bras' gives a good French perspective on things. Mike Robinson wrote a book on Quatre Bras a few years back too. And volume 1 of John Hussey's campaign history is good, although it is an account of the wider campaign as well.

On this day in 1915, Katherine Mansfield wrote these two sentences in a short letter to her brother, Leslie, who was serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France. Sadly, this would be the last time she wrote to him; Leslie was killed two months later.

Imagine telling this story without proof: “I didn't go to work because a cat fell on my head and then a dog with shoes tried to do me justice.”

It’s interesting how both the US right and left use Britain as a foil to assert their own culture’s superiority. To the U.S. left, Britain is a reactionary backwater that’s not enlightened like they are. To the U.S. right, Britain is basically North Korea, but under sharia law.

@helenlewis I am a dual national, and I remember when I finally understood that for many Americans, both left and right, Britain is still the former colonial ‘parent’ that they define themselves against. Because the US is rich, we forget that it has its own post-colonial element.
