Before that, Trump ruined the economy with tariffs, only to have the Supreme Court rule them illegal. Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act in 1930. FDR trounced Hoover in a landslide in 1932. Republicans didn't win Congress back for 14 years. They lost the White House for 2 decades. Trump's managed to combine his tariff war with an unwinnable war against Iran to virtually ensure a wipeout for Republicans in the midterms.
