@seeingmole @Cambodiataro I think it's impossible to trace Thai history back any further than the mid-15th century. My view is that King U Thong was Khmer — or rather, I'm starting to suspect that the figure identified as King U Thong, or Ramathibodi I, may never have existed at all.

服飾史の観点から衣装を「装飾」と「基礎構造」に分けて考えると、この歴史の複雑さが見えてきます。ご指摘の通り、現在見られるきらびやかな金属装飾や精巧な刺繍のスタイルは、18世紀以降のタイ（ラッタナコーシン朝）の宮廷で独自に創作・洗練された要素が非常に強いと思います。さらに、ここ数十年の様々なデザインの多くも同様です。
一方で、下半身に巻く布の基本的な着付け構造などは、アンコール遺跡のレリーフに見られるように古代クメールにルーツがあります。1431年のアユタヤによるアンコール陥落など複数回、多数のクメールの踊り子や職人がタイへ連行され、そこで基礎となる宮廷文化が移植されました。それが数百年かけてタイで独自発展し、19世紀に再びカンボジアへ逆輸入されたという文化の往復があったのが実態のようです。
基本の布の巻き方などはクメール由来、きらびやかな装飾はタイでの発展というように、この衣装は両国が歴史のレイヤーを重ね合わせて完成させたものではないでしょうか。文化が双方向に影響を与え合ってきた歴史を考えると、「どちらがルーツか」を主張し合い、歴史を掘り下げる事は良いとしても、「どちらかが盗んだ」という表現は、少しもったいないように感じます😓
歴史は本当に奥深いですね。また色々な視点で意見交換できたら嬉しいですし、今後の投稿も楽しみにしています。

@sagimiya_ @Cambodiataro It's a fakery in order to bring Thai history much further back in time. Even the word "Sukhothai" and "Ramkhamhaeng" is fabrication. "Thai" is a newly coined word. "Ram" as in Rama. No kings in the entire Indic sphere ever used "Rama" in their names.

@sagimiya_ @Cambodiataro The characters also are illogical. Vowels are written on the same line as consonants, which is unlike typically of Indic scripts which have vowels on top and bottom. It's not logical that modern Thai script, which has vowels on top and bottom, is descended from the Ram script.

@sagimiya_ @Cambodiataro Even the "Ramkhamhaeng" obelisk is a fakery commissioned by Rama 4. The shape is unusual. In Asia, inscriptions are either made on flat stone slabs or copper plates. Not an Egypt inspired obelisk shaped stone.

@sagimiya_ @Cambodiataro Women and men being bare chested were the norm since ancient times. Even in northern Thai Lanna culture. I believe this was probably the norm in Bagan and Mon culture as well. It was the norm in all Polynesian cultures, which is still the norm in places like Papua.

@sagimiya_ @Cambodiataro A lot of Thai culture is recent fabrication with little historical proof to back up. While after visiting Angkor Wat and other ancient sites in Thailand, the proof is right there in the stones of a prosperous culture, which was obviously not Thai.

@LinusMixson The New Tai Lue script is also a recent invention. In fact, they made all vowels on the same line as consonants, which is very unlike the Indic scripts where vowels are under or on top of consonants. The fakery Sukhothai script is also writing everything on 1 line.

@seeingmole I think that's besides the point being made here because it pretty clearly comes from Khmer, whether via Sukhothai or some other intermediate.

@sagimiya_ What both ultra nationalist groups must accept is that there are a lot of shared culture between the countries. When Khmer culture fell, Thai became dominant, but it also adopted a lot of Khmer culture. With time, the evolved the Khmer customs to a distinct Thai variant.

@seeingmole Thai is saturated with Khmer loanwords, so arguing sbai didn't exist in Thailand just because the word is Khmer is a tough case. But my actual point: what everyone calls "Ayutthaya-era costume" was invented in the 19th century.

@sagimiya_ Even the word "sbai" is Khmer word. If this costume was an original Thai dress, naturally it should have a native Thai word calling it. The fact they used a Khmer word to call this dress only proves its real origins.

As a Chinese person, I’m surprised to see someone claiming “Chinese descent” defending a grown man at the World Cup doing the rude eye-pulling gesture toward a Korean lady, saying “it’s funny, it’s the truth, people get offended too easily.”
Not all Asians have to accept this kind of public mockery as “harmless fun.”
Some of us simply prefer mutual respect and self-respect.

I am of Chinese descent and when I was growing up in Guatemala, a lot of the kids over there also made these types of gestures. I thought it was funny and laughed with them because it is the truth. The people doing this are just trying to have fun, it doesn't mean they are racist. People nowadays get offended really easy.

Inthanin at Bangchak is also OK.
